Obituary of Cecil Warford
Cecil Warford passed away peacefully at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s in the early hours of February 24th, 2025. Cecil, or “Cec” as he was known by his friends and family, spent his working life with the Department of Highways. After more than 40 years on the job, Cec was able to dedicate more time doing the things he enjoyed most; tending to his garden and working on odd jobs around the yard, camping, dancing with Edna and the Ocean Waves square dance group, and winning prizes at the church card games (he was a master at 45s and 120s). Cec was well known for his keen wit and sense of humour. Over the years Cecil was an active member of the community, participating in many church groups and functions. He played horn in the Hopewell Band, and in his youth teamed up with his brothers as members of the Upper Gullies hockey team.
Over his 98 years Cecil bore witness to many changes and events. He used slate tablets and a laptop computer; drove a horse and buggy and an automobile, did his school homework under a kerosene lamp and helped his sons with their’s under electric lights. He watched the Hindenburg airship float over Conception Bay on its way to New York, stood on the cliffs of Bell Island as a German U-Boat torpedoed ships at the dock, marvelled at the famous British battleship Hood as she lay anchored in Conception Bay and cheered King George VI and his wife Elizabeth as their motorcade passed through a bough archway in Upper Gullies.
Cecil was predeceased by parents Charles and Marion Warford, siblings Walter, William George, Harold, Mary, Florence, Violet, and Norman. Left with loving memories are his wife of 73 years, Edna (nee Rideout); sons James (Sharon) and John (Peggy); grandchildren Erica (John), Alyssa (Frankie), Ian, and Stephen (Deanna); great grandchildren Parker, Romee, Everett, and Harrison; brother Charles (Phyllis), sister Lillian (Ernest), sister-in-law, Phyllis, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. The family would like to thank Cecil’s caregivers at Chancellor Park nursing home and the Health Sciences Centre in St John’s. Your kindness and compassion will long be remembered.
Visitation will take place at Hickey’s Funeral Home, 570 Conception Bay Highway, Kelligrews, on Wednesday February 26 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, with the funeral taking place at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Upper Gullies, Conception Bay South, on Thursday, February 27 at 1:30 pm.
