Carmen’s Obituary
It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Carmen Paoliello on April 19th, 2025. Born on November 10th, 1959 in Wabigoon, ON to Italian immigrant parents Francesco and Felicia Paoliello, Carmen was the youngest of four children but the first to be born in Canada.
Carmen spent his childhood in Dryden, where he graduated from high school with honours in mathematics, going on to study at the University of Waterloo. His journey brought him up Highway 105 to Red Lake where he landed a career with what was then Campbell Mine (Placer Dome) as an underground miner. He later discovered his passion as a surveyor and he dedicated over 30 years to the gold mining trade.
While in Red Lake, Carmen met the love of his life, Olga (nee Poje), and they built a humble life together in the small community of Cochenour where they raised their only child, daughter Kayla.
Carmen took great pride in his involvement with the community. He joyfully took lead as the “projector man” at the Cochenour Hall movie nights with the Golden Volunteer committee, creating core memories for the local kids throughout the 90s/2000s.
Growing up Carmen was an avid sports fan and played various sports including baseball, basketball, badminton, tennis and hockey. He had a lifelong passion for sports and shared that joy with Kayla. Not only did he teach her how to pitch but also dedicated time as a volunteer coach for her youth baseball team, even leading the Cochenour A’s to win the championship title. It was undeniable that Carmen was a very proud Canadian by his loyalty to the Toronto Maple Leafs, Raptors and Blue Jays always rooting for his sport teams in unity as “Leaf Nation”.
Despite facing numerous challenges, Carmen never wavered in his love for his family. He was a devoted father to Kayla, and a loving Grandpa to his granddaughter Lyana. With the same patience and enthusiasm, he brought to teaching Kayla various sports and life skills, he took all opportunities to do the same with Lyana. Carmen also had a great appreciation for his nieces and nephews and would not miss the opportunity to celebrate their achievements.
Carmen was passionate about preserving the environment for the future generations. He was a self-taught jack of all trades and would find solitude in working outside in nature at his cabin. He enjoyed problem-solving, prospecting the land and appreciated the sunshine in all its energy forms.
Carmen will forever be remembered for his brilliance, interesting quirks, great taste in music and the gift of seeing the world through an extraordinary lens. He was blessed with beat, the ability to dance and had the most infectious, heartfelt laugh. It will be severely missed yet absolutely treasured in our hearts.
While it feels Carmen was taken too soon, his memory will be lovingly cherished by his daughter Kayla (Sylvain) and precious granddaughter Lyana. He is predeceased by his loving wife, Olga, his parents Francesco and Felicia, and his brother-in-law, Ray. He is survived by his siblings; Sab (Allison), Carlo (Anne), and Tonie, along with his in-law family members and an abundance of nieces and nephews that he cared deeply for.
Cremation has taken place and a ceremony to honour his life will take place at a later date.
When you think of Carmen, remember the best things in life are free.
Memorial donations in Carmen’s name can be made to the Red Lake Heritage Centre.
Laughter’s Echo
In the sudden silence, a laughter rings,
A memory of joy, a love that clings,
Their humor, a treasure, a gift they’d share,
In moments tough, they’d show their care.
We’ll miss the laughter, their jokes, their fun,
But cherish the moments, one by one,
For in our hearts, they’ll always stay,
Laughter’s echo, in memory’s play.
Our dear one, forever near,
A love eternal, undying, clear,
In laughter’s embrace, we find our peace,
A love unbroken, a bond that’s ceaseless
