It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of the late James (Gideon) Courtney, announce his sudden passing on Monday February 17th 2025 in Burnt Islands, NL at the age of 78 years.
Born in Burnt Islands, NL Gideon was the son of the late James and Meta Courtney (nee Smurridge) He was also predeceased by his parents in-law Levi and Frances (nee Lovell) Keeping; sister Lavina Seymour; nephew Nolan Munden: brother in-law Gordon Keeping; and sister in-law Wanda Courtney.
Leaving to mourn with fond and precious memories, his wife of almost 60 years, Dora (nee Keeping); his children; Cathy (Paul), Delphine (Eric), Gregory (Janet), Patsy (Todd), Darren (Falon), and Jocelyn (Jeffrey); grandchildren Milton (April), Curtis (Mackenzie), Brandon (Danielle), Kayla (Steve), Nisa, Steven (Cecilia), Brittany (Tyler), Nicholas, Juliana (Cody), Charlie, Jay, and Jasmine; great-grandchildren Serenity, Cassondra, Madison, Tanner, Tate, Bryce, Tayler, Aria, Alayna, and Alexis.
He will also be dearly missed by his siblings John, Claude (Marlene), Kevin, Henry (Anderine), Dion, Shelia (Eric), Marie (David), Yvonne (Don), Kathy, Denise (Anthony), Margaret (Ronnie), Meta (Jabez); brothers and sisters in-law Gilbert (Adeline), George (Mabel), Roger (Janie), Kenneth (Jacquline), Linda (Amos), Eileen (Lorne) and Tom (Deanna); special friend Hughie Keeping plus a large circle of nieces, nephews and many friends.
Gideon was a devoted fisherman and skipper of the Gregory D. Patsy. Known for his quick wit and infectious laughter, he had a knack for lightening the mood even during the most challenging fishing seasons. His genuine love for his children was evident in the way his eyes sparkled when he spoke of them, but it was his grandchildren who truly captured his heart and filled his world with joy. Always ready to lend a hand, he often volunteered for babysitting duties, relishing the precious moments spent creating memories with them. Gideon had a heart of gold; a man who would selflessly give you the shirt off his back if it meant helping a friend in need. His warmth and generosity left a lasting imprint on everyone he met, making him not just a beloved fisherman but a cherished pillar of the community.
Family and friends are welcome to visit on Friday, February 21st, and Saturday February 22nd, 2025 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM at St. George’s Anglican Church in Burnt Islands, NL. With the funeral taking place on Sunday February 23rd. 2025 at 11 AM, officiated by Rev. John Billard. Interment to follow at Hillside Haven Cemetery. Donations in Gideon’s memory, can be made to his family as they plan to buy something special for the church in his honour.
