It is with great sadness that the family of Willis James Buckingham, 90, of Bridgewater, announce his passing on Saturday, December 10, 2022, at South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater, NS after a brief illness.
Born in Russell, ON, he was a son of the late Robert and Augusta May (Boothe) Buckingham.
Willis graduated from MacDonald College (McGill University) in Agriculture May 1951 and remained a farmer at heart his entire life despite working in several other fields.
He met Marian through Young People’s Social Club and they were married in October 1954.
Family and especially grandchildren and great-grandchildren were extremely important to them both.
At the age of 89, Willis was adventurous enough to pick up and relocate to a new home in beautiful Nova Scotia and in July of this year Willis enjoyed several celebrations to mark his 90th birthday in style.
Willis and Marian attended First-St Andrew’s United Church in London, ON. Drawn there by the wealth of great musical programs and happily staying because of the warmth and friendliness of both ministers and congregation. Willis served on several committees within the church and continued watching services virtually during covid and after he moved to the Maritimes. Despite being so far away, he continued working on picture collages and was still serving on the Planning Committee via zoom.
Willis is survived by his daughters Deborah (Randy) MacPherson of Waterloo, ON, Heather Buckingham of Bridgewater, and Donna (Howard) Ray of Stonehurst; grandchildren Sarah (Gregory) Ashton and James (Christine) Featherstone; great-grandchildren Mackenzie and Victoria LeBlanc, and Austin Walton; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, Willis was predeceased by his wife Marian (nee Last), sisters Marion Marsh, Eva Coombs, Wilda Tanner and brother Dalton.
There will not be a funeral. Cremation has taken place and internment will occur in North Russell Cemetery (Ontario) at a later date yet to be determined.
Memorial donations made to the Canadian Hemophilia Society (www.hemophilia.ca) would be appreciated by the family.
