Bill passed away peacefully at the Westman Nursing Home in Virden.
Born in Winnipeg to Mac and Ellen McQuaker, Bill grew up in Charleswood, living on Roblin
Blvd and later on McQuaker Drive.
Bill is survived by his wife Gail (McCreedy) and their children Janet Peters (McQuaker) and her
husband Craig, Mac McQuaker and his wife Christi and his granddaughters Kieley and
Addison. He is also survived by his sister Margaret Ellen Teske (McQuaker) and her sons Mark
and Michael Teske.
Bill attended school in Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba graduating from the Agriculture
Department. He then took a job with Manitoba Pool Elevators that saw Bill and Gail move to
the Virden area where they took roots in the Assiniboine Valley.
Bill spent over 30 years with Manitoba Pool Elevators travelling the back roads of southern
Manitoba as Field Supervisor before retiring.
Over the years, the farm grew to include hay and cash crops and was home to the River Valley
Equestrian Centre. It was a family affair with Bill being the Blacksmith, welder, carpenter,
electrician and general Jack of all Trades. The Farm also was home to the Virden Pony Club,
hosting many cross country events and Pony Club Rallies over the cross country course, built
by Bill jump by jump!
Bill was locally involved in many organizations, including the Virden Credit Union, Virden Rifle
and Pistol Club, Virden Trap Club, Archery Club, Virden Ag Society and Rodeo, Cubs and
Scouts, Virden River Valley School and the Virden Animal Hospital.
Bill was Councillor with RM Woodsworth from 1995 – 2010, and was a Member at Large for the
Upper Assiniboine River Conservation District representing the RM of Wallace-Woodworth from
2015 – 2020.
In 2017, Bill was nominated For Citizen of the Year, where he was one of two runners-up that
year.
Bill, along with Gail were inducted into the Horseman’s Hall of Fame in 2003.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Winnipeg on Thursday, September 7 and also in Virden at
the family farm on Saturday afternoon, September 9th.
