In Celebration of
Wilfred Eugene Marshall
January 1, 1941 –
September 15, 2023
On Friday September 15, 2023, the light of a warm bright star gently faded with the passing of Wilfred Marshall. Wilf was the loving husband and best friend of Cathy for 38 years. He was the proud father of Glen and Laura (Todd), and dear grandfather of Mary-Grace, Teagan, Rachael, Ryan, Max, and great-grandson Nicolaas. He will be fondly remembered by his in-laws the entire Hargot family. On the East Coast he is deeply mourned by his siblings Frank (Rosalind), Lorainne (Dave) and Glen (Shirley) as well as many nieces and nephews. Wilf was predeceased by his parents Glen and Maud and his brothers Roy and Ron.
Wilf was born and raised in Humbermouth, Newfoundland. After high school he joined the navy, was stationed in Halifax, Nova Scotia and then transferred to Hamilton, Ontario where he settled. Upon leaving the navy he trained as a millwright and worked at Stelco and then St, Peter’s Hospital from where he retired after 26 years of service.
He was known for his love of the outdoors and his passion was spending every summer at his cottage in Newfoundland. Here he enjoyed jigging for cod out on his boat, riding his ATV on the many trails throughout the woods, hiking, gardening, star gazing by the campfire and cooking traditional down home meals.
The love of the ocean ran deep through his veins. Fishing on and watching the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean, or swimming and snorkelling in the Caribbean brought him great pleasure. He was fortunate to have vacationed on many islands down south. Strolling along the shores of any body of water always brought him a deep sense of peace and tranquility.
Wilf loved playing the guitar and harmonica. He favoured old country and folk music. He was an avid reader, enjoying books on world history, Canadiana, astronomy, and politics.
Sadly, six years ago cancer took hold of his body and would not let go. Enduring two major surgeries and many treatments, he traversed this medical journey with positivity, grace and dignity that was much to be admired. A heartfelt thank you to all the doctors, nurses and support workers who provided care and assistance. A special thank you to all the staff at the Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice for the soothing and tender care they gave to Wilf during his final days. Their compassion and support was a great comfort to his family.
Wilf will always be remembered for that twinkle in his beautiful blue eyes, his sense of humour, engaging laugh, and warm smile.
He had a good life. He was loved by all. He will be profoundly missed.
Visitation will be held at Bay Gardens Funeral Home, Burlington, 1010 Botanical Drive on Sunday September 24th from 1 p.m. till 2 p.m. A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. following visitation.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice or the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated.
