May 11, 1933 – February 24, 2023. Passed peacefully away at James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander, Wallace Brown of Glenwood
Left to mourn with loving memories are his Wife Ruth (nee Wells), four sons Roger (Beryl), Robert (Cathy), Rendall (Kim), Peter (Heather) and one daughter Paula (Darrin)
Grandchildren – Jessica Frangione (Paul), Stephanie Brown (Darrin), Ryan Brown (Courtney), Adam Brown ( Jasmine ), Zachary John, Zoey John (Robert), Tyler Brown, Great Grandchildren Vada, Eden and Astrid Frangione. Special Niece Sherry Smith and Brother in law Bob Wells (Netta)
Predeceased by parents David and Sarah Brown, brothers Ned, Angus, Sisters Hazel Puddester, Leona Dillion and Minnie Fitzgerald , Step-sisters Annie Gosse and Mae Breen, In-laws Harry and Edith Wells
Wallace was born and educated in Tilton-Spaniard’s Bay. At age 17 he learned Telegraphy at the Railway Station in Spaniard’s bay under the tutelage of Mr. Randell. Upon course completion he went to work with CNR as a Telegraph Operator and his first job was in Norris Arm. From there he worked in 22 Railway Stations as a relief operator from Avondale to Port aux Basques until May 05, 1955 when his bid for a full time position at Glenwood Station was successful which he held until 1960. He resigned in 1960, when he accepted a position with Canada Post as postmaster which he held for 28 years until his retirement in 1988.
Wallace had an amazing memory and many stories were told especially ones related to the railway as there is a saying “Once a railroader always a railroader “, regardless of position. He has regaled his children, grandchildren and others who were interested with stories i.e. crawling between tracks in order to get to work due to the wind in Lauchie McDougal’s Territory on the West Coast,
of people with whom he worked , stations, situations which developed , especially on the Gaff Topsails.
Wallace and Ruth (Wells) were married 64 years on January 21st and together raised 4 sons and 1 daughter. His pleasures were very simple – the outdoors. He learned to navigate his many boats to his favorite spot on earth, his cabin on the beach of Sou’ West Gander Lake for 33 years. Later, time was spent at Big Pond and Provincial Parks where new camping friends were made. He enjoyed watching hockey, especially when Montreal and Ottawa played.
Wallace was a skilled checker player and taught most of his grandchildren how to play and lose gracefully. However, his biggest challenger was Ruth !!!
His one enjoyment this past summer was a drive to the Glenwood Boat Launch area, look up the lake and reflect.

Family will be accepting friends at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Glenwood on Monday, February 27th from 2:00 P.M. – 4:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. – 9:00 P.M. Funeral service will take place on Tuesday, February 28th at 2:00 P.M. Burial will take place at a later date.
