Hippie, (grand) father, brother, friend, and collector, Thomas H. Harnest, first of the family to be born in Canada, on October 30th, 1962 passed away on January 2nd, 2023, surrounded by loved ones. Tom recently celebrated his 60th birthday as best he could with his Crystal Head Vodka skulls, tie dye shirts, Zippo collection, and his family.
He is survived by his 6 children, Toni (Chris), Tasha (J.R.), Will (Autumn), Alex (Sam), Zoey, Katie (Billy), his 5 grandchildren Damin, Axton, Aurora, Aleah and T.J., and his 2 older brothers Jorg Harnest and Jens Harnest along with their families. He was predeceased by his parents, Ellen and Wilhelm Harnest.
His proudest accomplishments in his life are and will forever be his children and seeing the people they have become. He was beyond elated and proud to have spent time with as many grandchildren as he could. They were definitely the apple of his eyes.
He grew up in Chateauguay, in and out of hospitals for most of his childhood into adulthood. He graduated from Howard S. Billings high school in 1979, finding his passion years later for computers. He moved to Hamilton, Ontario in 2007 for work, and about a decade later put down roots in Lindsay, to live in peace and harmony, fishing with his best buddy of 50 years, Wayne Kennedy, his brother in every aspect.
Tom would have wanted his vast Facebook Family, who were with him everyday, who sent their love and hope for a world with more Tom and not less, to know just how many hours of happiness they brought to him. He would not have traded that community for the world.
A friend wrote a touching poem that Tom fell in love with. Some of it reads:
May your last sleep be as sweet as the eyes of your grandchildren,
May the tunes of your favourite song run on repeat in your head,
May the thoughts of your children and the memories of best friends,
occupy the feeling and comfort your last breath.
I hope when the angels sing,
They sing in tie dyed tones,
I hope the zippo lights,
Light up your loved ones homes.
Tom left us the same way he lived his own life, on his own terms. He would tell us all to do the same, to live our lives, in our way, the best we can. So show your tie dyed pride, play some 80’s rock, and raise your Zippos in memory of Tom.
He wanted everyone to be happy and to celebrate the life that he did get to live. He has been cremated and has requested a celebration of life in lieu of a funeral.
