Obituary
His Honour T. Denis Lordon, retired Judge of the Provincial Court of New Brunswick, husband of Kathleen Hogan Lordon, K.C., passed away on March 2, 2023, following a brief illness.
Born in Chatham, N.B. on June 2, 1946, he was the son of the late Paul B. Lordon, Q.C., and Celia (Dolan) Lordon; he was predeceased by his brothers John, Paul and Michael, sister-in-law Nancy Lordon and recently, his cherished Aunt Betty Clancy. In addition to his spouse of 25 years Mr. Lordon is survived by four children; daughters: Carolyn Lordon (Peter Gyorkos) of Fredericton, Cheryl Carroll (Ted), their sons Ryan and Evan of Miramichi, NB, sons, Robert Lordon of Calgary, Richard Lordon (Allison Casey) of Calgary, their daughter Stella, granddaughter Hailey Lordon (daughter of Richard Lordon and Dawn Milner), three stepsons, Brad Wingate (Jennifer Craig) of Toronto, Geoff Wingate (Cheryl Koziel) of Moncton and Dr. Timothy Wingate (Maria Pavlova) of Kitchener. Mr. Lordon is also survived by his ex-wife Murielle Lordon of Fredericton, sisters-in-law Donna Lordon of Ottawa and Mona Lordon of Miramichi, sisters, Mary Jane Wood (Michael), Elizabeth Rigley (Jack), Ellen Dinan (David), Marian Whitty (Barry) brothers, Reverend Father Bill Lordon and Joe Lordon, Aunt Louise Werstiuk, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by his dear father and mother-in-law, W. James Hogan and Rita Hogan of Bathurst, sister-in-law Coleen Hogan (Eric Connell) of West Kelowna, and brothers-in-law Patrick Hogan (Shannon Boase) of Vancouver and Timothy Hogan of Halifax.
Mr. Lordon was a graduate of the class of 1965 of St. Thomas High School in Chatham. He went on to attend St. Thomas University in Fredericton, NB where he graduated in 1969 with his Bachelor of Arts. While at Saint Thomas University he became President of the first Sports Governing Body. He was a member of Saint Thomas University’s hockey team (The Tommies), which proudly earned the honour of representing New Brunswick at the first ever Canada Winter Games (Quebec City, 1967). In 2017, on the 50th anniversary of this event Mr. Lordon and all members of this team were inducted into the Saint Thomas University Sports Wall of Fame.
In 1969, Mr. Lordon was admitted to the University of New Brunswick Law School and graduated with his Bachelor of Laws 1972. As a young lawyer Judge Lordon formed the law firm of Martin, Lordon and McKenna with offices in Chatham and Newcastle, New Brunswick. For the next 20 years he was engaged in the general practice of law with a special passion for criminal law. On many occasions he appeared before the Provincial Court, the Court of Queens Bench and the Court of Appeal. He was also appointed special prosecutor for the Federal department of Fisheries and Oceans. For many years, Mr. Lordon, was a member of the Law Society of New Brunswick and the Canadian Bar Association. As a lawyer and later as a Judge he was often called on to teach young lawyers in the Criminal section of the Law Society of New Brunswick’s Bar Admission Course.
In addition to practising law Mr. Lordon was a member and served on the executive of the Miramichi Golf Club, the Miramichi Curling Club, CNIB, and the RCAF Association. Mr. Lordon was also active in Politics on the Provincial and Federal levels for many years.
In 1992 Mr. Lordon was appointed to the Provincial Court of New Brunswick, assigned to the Judicial District of Miramichi. Over the next 25 years he presided in courts in Miramichi as well as in every other Judicial District in the province of New Brunswick. He was past president of the New Brunswick Provincial Court Judge’s Association and an ex officio member of the National Association of Provincial Court Judges. While President of the New Brunswick Provincial Court Judge’s Association he served on the Education Committee, responsible for the continuing education of Judges in Atlantic Canada. Judge Lordon travelled extensively throughout the country to attend and participate in Judicial education sessions. In 2011 Judge Lordon retired from his full-time position to continue as a supernumerary Judge, sitting in courts across the province, until his full retirement in 2018.
Judge Lordon was an avid salmon fisherman, spending many wonderful hours fly fishing in the world renowned Miramchi River as well as other rivers in Canada. For many years he was a member of the Square Forks Fishing Club. Upon retirement, he and Kathleen moved to the West Kelowna, British Columbia where they enjoyed the fine wines of the Okanagan, gardening and playing golf. While playing in the Two Eagles Golf Club Senior Men’s League he proudly got that elusive hole in one on April 14, 2021.
Judge Lordon’s family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Johan Wannenburg, the nurses of the Palliative Care Program in West Kelowna as well as to all the staff at the Kelowna Hospice House whose kindness and compassion was greatly appreciated.
The funeral will take place at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in West Kelowna on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, at 11am. with a reception to follow at the Canyon Ridge Clubhouse. A Celebration of Life for Judge Lordon will take place in New Brunswick this summer.
