Obituary
Ruth Anne Brewer, (Shortliffe) enjoyed Christmas and New Years with her family and friends before passing peacefully January 5, 2023 at the Western Long Term Care Home with family at her side. Ruth’s faith was the cornerstone of her life and she was confident of in her eternal life with Christ.
Ruth was born in Nova Scotia but moved to Corner Brook in 1970 with her husband Gordon. Without family in NL she embraced Corner Brook as her home by making many wonderful and enduring friendships from church, her street and Beta Sigma Phi (of which she was a lifetime member) and by being active in community organizations. She became a member of First Baptist Church, now Corner Brook Baptist Church, soon after her arrival in NL, participating in various ministries and serving on committees. Ruth volunteered with The Food Bank Network of the Bay of Islands holding the positions of President and Treasurer over her 18 years of service. With Gordon she was a long time member of the Bay of Islands Yacht Club and the Blow Me Down Ski Club enjoying sailing and cross-country skiing.
Ruth’s love and support of Gordon throughout their 48 year marriage allowed him to realize many of his goals and dreams and each of her four children were always secure in her love for them. Ruth loved being a Gramie and GG and enjoyed a special relationship with each of her eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Over the years her granddogs gave her much comfort.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband Gordon, daughter Chrissy and father Ivan. She is survived by her mother Peggy Shortliffe, children Deanna (Carl), Brian (Anna) and Patrick, son-in-law Terry, siblings Harold, Margie, David (Wendy), Nancy (Thom), grandchildren Meagan (Mike), Alex (Sophie), Anna (Johnathan), Jayden, Logan, Luke, Julianna and Sadie, great grandchildren Ivan, Gabriel and Elodie and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. O’Brien and Collette, doctors, nurses and staff at WMRH Cancer Unit and the home support workers she had prior to entering palliative care.
Special thanks to the entire staff of the Palliative Care Unit of the Western Long Term Care Home, especially Dr. Kate Lafferty. The attentiveness and compassion given to our mom over the last few months was exceptional, her relationships with the staff brought her great joy and gave peace to her family.
The care and generosity of all of mom’s friends, especially Willie, Anderine, Gertie and Sharon, will forever be appreciated by the family. The devotion and love shown to her by all her family and friends is a reflection of who our mom was and the legacy she leaves behind.
At Ruth’s request, cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at Country Haven Funeral Home on Monday January 9th, 2023 from the hours of 7-9PM. A funeral service will take place at Corner Brook Baptist Church on Tuesday January 10th, 2023 at 1PM with Pastor Mitchell Foley officiating. There will be a future celebration of Ruth’s life to take place in Nova Scotia at a later date. Flowers in her memory will be accepted. Donations can also be made in her memory to the Western Palliative Care Unit, the Food Bank Network of the Bay of Islands or to a charity of one’s choice.
