The family of Ronald (Ron) Steven Cherry sorrowfully announces his sudden passing at
home surrounded by his loved ones. He is survived by his wife, Elisapeti; his children,
Joshua (Sally), Kieta (Sia), Saane (Chris), Sitani (Amber), and Shirley. He is predeceased
by his father, Robert Cherry, and is also survived by his mother, Shirley Niven; siblings,
Bob, Kim, and Jim; in-laws, nieces and nephews; and family in Tonga.
Ron was born in Ontario and, throughout his early life, he quickly grew to be an animal
lover, a jokester, an inspiration to his siblings, and a true friend to anyone he met,
especially his childhood friend, Al. He later attended George Brown College to study
the Culinary Arts. This fuelled the start of a voracious passion, which led him to move
to Sooke, British Columbia in 1986 to work as the Chef of the renowned Sooke
Harbour House. This kitchen also forged the meet-cute between Ron and the love of
his life, Elisapeti, and it soon formed the heart of their love.
In 1992, after the birth of two beautiful children, they ventured to Vava’u, Tonga, to set
roots in Elisapeti’s native land. The following years brought three more loving children
and the opening of the Mermaid Restaurant of which Ron and Elisapeti co-ran. The
Mermaid became one of the most well-known culinary experiences on the Island for
tourists, locals, and the Royal family – including the King of Tonga. After 17 years in the
South Pacific, the Cherry family returned to Canada and eventually gravitated back to
Sooke.
Ron filled his cup day in and day out telling animated stories at home with his family,
carving and burning life back into wood, feeling the vibration of his guitar strings
dancing, dipping his ears into a variety of musical genres, hauling bundles of bull kelp
out of the waves and into his workshop, and having a good ol’ time fishing for salmon
and crab with his life-long friend, Dale. Above all else, he deeply loved his family. Ron,
you will be cherished forever and your legacy will live on inside of our home and our
hearts.
Please join our family for a visitation, memory-sharing and refreshments on Saturday,
January 7, 2023 from 1:00pm to 2:30pm at the Royal Oak Burial Park (4673 Falaise
Drive Victoria, BC V8Y 1B4). A celebration of Ron’s life will take place in July 2023.
