Obituary
Born on Feb 7, 1937, Bob passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on August 31, 2023 at 86 years young.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, James and Elizabeth Serne, his brother William James “Jim” Serne, and his beloved son Allan Serne. Loving family who survive him are his wife Joan Serne (nee Wiebe), daughter Cheryl Lux (Grant), his cherished grandchildren Charlize and Tyler, sister-in-law Doris Serne and her family.
Bob’s family roots hail from Saskatchewan. Bob received both an Accounting Degree and a Civil Engineering Degree from the University of Saskatchewan. Upon completion of his studies, he served in the Air Force. Bob was a suit and tie kind of guy who relished routine, stability and security. He was proud to work as an engineer for his career and it gave him deep satisfaction to serve his family and community. Bob supported Riverbend United Church with a generous spirit as the treasurer for many years.
What did Bob most enjoy? Top of list for over 60 years was spending time with his cherished wife Joan. They met on a blind date and Joan knew that very night she would marry Bob. Joan often said she felt loved by her man every single day from that day forward. Bob had a deep affection for animals of all sorts and found great pleasure in sharing their company and providing treats and pats and play. Bob thoroughly enjoyed watching sports on TV and always shared his play-by-play account of the game and critiques of the referees bad calls. The game of golf was one he adored to play. As a member of the Edmonton Golf and Country Club for many years, he played countless rounds of golf and developed many good friendships. The annual event of dressing up and celebrating Mother’s Day at the Country Club brings back many fond memories and beautiful family pictures. Bob was a competitive man who liked to play by the rules and count accurately “to the penny”! The patience of family and friends was often tried during card and board games. A true Irishman, Bob had a keen sense of humour and loved to kibitz. Bob was loyal to his family and friends and valued deeply those relationships throughout his lifetime.
Reflections from his daughter Cheryl:
My Dad was always ready with a word of encouragement, a warm smile and a hug. Dad and I shared many of the Serne family traits including our sense of funny and ways of teasing and the different way our brains learn and process information. I so appreciated his positive nature and his shrugging his shoulders and saying it will all work out attitude. Problems were always solvable and he kept perspective. I never remember Bob complaining about anything. He happily went off to work every day, he was grateful for his family and friends and freely expressed that often. Not once do I recall him grumbling about his diabetes and the complications it brought to his health nor the fact that he had to stab himself every day for more than 38 years. Despite his diabetes, Dad would indulge regularly to satisfy his junk food cravings – diet Coke, Cheesies and Tim Horton Icecapps were always on the pick-up list. I happily complied because he enjoyed these treats so much. Dad liked to do and build things his own way. Bob was known to engage “a lot” in those activities he enjoyed: reading books and war poetry, golf and more golf, puzzle after puzzle, his food treats. It was always very special to me that my son Tyler, his only grandson, coincidentally shared the same birth date. We always celebrated this special day together and it was always a uniquely bonding time. Dad enjoyed to mentor his grandson Tyler on manly things. He was pleased as punch that his granddaughter Charlize was his own personal hairdresser. Char also inked Grandpa with his one and only tattoo. Bob loved nothing better than spending time with his grandchildren; he always attended their sporting events, encouraged them and assisted them with their school work and enjoyed their company and conversation. Bob was an extremely generous Grandpa with his time, talents and treasures. My Dad’s way of being brought great stability and security to my life and that of my own family. I miss this so much already. It brings me great comfort to know how deeply my Dad was loved here on earth and that now he is in heaven with those who passed before him and he is loved there too.
There will be no funeral service held for Bob but we warmly welcome any photos or memories you may wish to share. It would be just great to hear from you.
