It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Richard Kingsley Gilbert, aged 86, of Chatham. With his loving family at his side, he passed away on Friday March 24th, 2023, at the University Hospital London. Richard “Dick” was born in Dover Township to the late John and Lily Pearl Gilbert. He is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Ruth Ann (Merritt) and his four sons, Rick (Carol) of Mitchell’s Bay, Gary (Linda) of Chatham, Jeff (Mariann) of Cambridge, and Tim (Monica) of Toronto. Dick was a loving grandfather to ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Also surviving Dick are his two loving sisters, Mary Ellen Mortier, and Evelyn Patterson. He is predeceased by his brothers Murray, Eldon, Glen, and three sisters Nora Herbert, Jean Jones, and Velma Rose. He will be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews. His lifelong friends and neighbours will truly miss him dearly. Dick farmed for most of his life. He valued the land, the hard work, and his farming community. Dick and Ruth travelled to many places to visit family, to square dance, and to enjoy their fifth-wheel trailer. Dick was a man of few words, but no one ever doubted his pride and love for his family and friends. Family and friends are invited to the Alexander & Houle Funeral Home, 245 Wellington St. West, Chatham, 519-352-2710 Monday March 27th, 2023, with visiting from 6 to 9 pm and on Tuesday March 28th, 2023, from 10 am until the time of the funeral service. The funeral service for Dick will be conducted from the chapel of the funeral home on Tuesday March 28th, 2023, at 11:30 am with Rev. Mike Maroney officiating. The service will be livestreamed. Cremation to follow with interment at Arnold Cemetery at a later date. Friends planning an expression of remembrance are asked to consider the Chatham-Kent Hospice Foundation and Ontario Heart & Stroke Foundation.
