Surrounded with great love, Reta May Ruth Burnside (nee Graham) left this world with peace and grace at Campbell House Hospice in Collingwood, February 13, 2023, in her 99th year.
Reta was born in St Boniface, Manitoba, growing up in Guelph ON with her 6 siblings, 4 sisters (Iris, Elsie, Norma & Dorothy), 2 brothers (Grant & Ken), where she met her husband of 63 years, Robert (Bob) William Burnside (deceased 2013), at a youth dance. She partnered in his Veterinarian practice on Highway 26 for many years. She also worked in Canadian Tire in Collingwood as a cashier and exclusively for Mr & Mrs Phelan (Cara Foods) at Osler Bluff.
Reta was a veteran, CWAC (Canadian Women’s Army Corp)stationed in England during WW2, joining the Legion in Peterborough, ON, where she participated in the parades on November 11 for many years.
Reta was a kind, compassionate ‘Sergeant Major’, (Dad’s label), of her 4 children, Wenda Blakey (deceased 2002) Irene Webster, Judy Burnside and Robert John Burnside, along with the 5 Rolling children (Tom, Larry, Sally, Ken, Doug) of her very cherished friends, Vera and Bill Rolling.
She is loved and profoundly missed by her 8 Grandchildren, Michelle Robinson (Seri), Katherine Love (Jeremy) Lesley Blakey, Megan Baker, Amanda Baker (Adam Knight) and Hunter Webster (Shamus Moore), Robert James Burnside (Armanda Lynn), Danielle Burnside and cherished by her 10 Great Grandchildren, Tyler and Carter Love, Mickaela, Emery and Cayden Moore, Charlotte and Clair, Callie and Eleana, and Scout who will forever remember and keep her in their hearts.
Reta lived a full, creative, active life with her family, building a legacy of love, kindness and compassion. She was very active in her church, Trinity United, where she volunteered through her Women’s Unit, even with limited eyesight. She loved her winters in Florida being involved in many creative activities. She will be incredibly missed!!
In lieu of flowers, donations to Campbell House Hospice, Collingwood, would be greatly appreciated. It’s a facility unlike any other for their compassion and kindness, a tribute to Reta’s own qualities.
