MITCHELL, Raymond –
Raymond Mitchell (Roman Michalowski) passed away on 1 May 2023 in Etobicoke at age 95. He was the cherished husband of Christine and beloved father to Adrienne (Ian) and Eric (Todd). Raymond was born in Horodnytsia, Ukraine on 18 July 1927. As a young boy, he immigrated to Canada with his mother, Anna, where they joined her husband and Ray’s father Isadore, initially settling in Sudbury. Ray’s childhood experiences of schooling, the mining industry, and the resilience of the Ukrainian-Canadian community were formative influences in his life. He always spoke so highly of his talented mother, acknowledging how important she was to his family’s welfare, working as a freelance seamstress.
In 1941, the family moved to Toronto, where, as a member of the Ukrainian National Youth Federation, Ray met Christine, the love of his life to whom he was married for 69 years. Her incredible patience, love and positive outlook were crucial to his wellbeing. Their marriage was the foundation for his many achievements. Ray received his BA degree from the University of Toronto. He attended law school at Osgoode Hall and, in 1960, was called to the Bar. In 1976, he was appointed as Queen’s Counsel. In 1981, Ray became a co-founder and senior member of the Mitchell, Bardyn & Zalucky law firm. He practiced law with integrity, honesty, and an unwavering commitment to meeting the needs of his clients. He retired from practice as a 50-year life-time member of the Law Society of Ontario.
Ray was a patron member of the St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Parish and, over the years, acted as counsel for the parish in various capacities. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed skiing and, especially, golf, a passion he shared with Christine, for many years. Ray took immense pride in the accomplishments of his colleagues, friends, children, and family members.
He was always generous to friends, employees and associates, and would go the extra mile when they needed his help. We will miss his penchant and joy for storytelling, remarkable memory, and extensive knowledge of history. He was a fighter to the very end.
