VAN BENTHEM, PIETERNELLA
Peacefully on Friday, July 14th, 2023, Pieternella Cornelia (Nel) Van Benthem (nee DeKleer) of Cheney, Ontario, after 43 years of waiting to be with her beloved husband again, went home to be with our Lord and Saviour.
She is survived by her children Margaret (late Wesley Beimers), Alida (Henk Herweyer), Jim (Joan), Albert (Kathleen), Andrew (Catherine), and Chris (Melanie), and grandchildren Amanda, Nancy, Joseph, William, Andrew, Leanne, Timothy, Jeffrey, Jennifer, Brandy, Holly, Marissa, Jeremiah, Gregory, Josina, Joshua, Daniel, Paul, Rachel, Naomi, Emma, Jonathan, Noah, Luke and Laura. She is also survived by siblings Mary , Eric, Griet and Aaltje and 23 great-grandchildren, and her good friend (and sister-in-law) Alie in the Netherlands, who kept Nel informed about the Van Benthem family overseas.
Nel was predeceased by her husband Albert and by her parents Jacobus and Aaltje DeKleer, son Evert (Alison), great-grandson Clark, siblings Teuntje and Pieter, and her best friend Alberta Noort.
Nel was born on March 7th, 1933 in Avereest, Netherlands where she met the love of her life, Albert Van Benthem, before immigrating to Canada in 1952. Albert followed her and they were united in marriage in Ottawa, Ontario on April 24,1954. Together, they raised a family of 7 children which continued to grow after Albert’s passing in 1980 to include 25 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
Her passion for sewing, knitting, crocheting, among other crafts, resulted in her labours receiving many accolades and ribbons at town fairs throughout the region. They could also be seen at many a Christmas bazaar.
Friends and family are welcome to join her children at the Daley Family Funeral Home at 6971 Bank Street on Thursday, July 20th between 2-4 and 6-8. Funeral Friday July 21st at 11 am at the Calvary Christian Reformed Church, 3782 Russell Road, Ottawa. Interment to follow at North Russell Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, a disease she had survived but did have an impact on the family over the years. Condolences may be left at www.daleyffh.ca
