Philomena Theresa Walter, July 23, 1930 – January 4, 2023
It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, Philomena Theresa Walter (Sander), beloved wife of the late Fredrick Henry Walter, on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at the Park Meadows Good Samaritan Society in Lethbridge, Alberta, at the age of 92 years.
Philomena was born in Beiseker, Alberta, to Anton and Mechtilda (Schmaltz) Sander, where she was raised on the family farm along with thirteen siblings. She then later obtained her nursing degree in Calgary. Her career spanned from Barrhead to Calgary, until she eventually made Lethbridge her home, raising her children and fostering many others. She retired from the Campbell Clinic, then continued to work part-time at Gordie’s Grocery and Fred’s Bakery.
Philomena was active in supporting her children with all equestrian activities, as well as hockey and baseball, and sat on the Board for all. Her craft of paper toll adorns the homes of her children and grandchildren who meant the world to her. Many memories were made in their own backyard when she decided to have a hole dug to make shape for a backyard swimming pool. She didn’t skip a beat in that pool, playing with each and every grandchild. What a fun Grandma.
Philomena is survived by her two sons, Ken (Augusta) of Lethbridge and Ron (Kathy) of Calgary, and by her daughter-in-law, Cori of Medicine Hat. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren and four siblings.
Philomena was predeceased by her mother and father, daughter Judy, son Bill, two grandchildren, one great grandson and eight of her siblings.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you for the compassionate care Philomena received from the staff at Park Meadows Good Samaritan Society and from Dr. Colin Walsh.
A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.
