It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Peter J. Casey on Tuesday, June 26, 2023. Peter was born on September 9, 1944 in Tabusintac, NB, he was the son of the late Louise (LaTulippe) Hachey and Edouard J. Caissie. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
In the early ’50s, Peter attended St. Anthony’s Parish Church in Devon and began his journey to learn English, a daunting task for a young French boy from Tabusintac, NB, an Acadian community. Over time he grew to accept his new community, making his presence felt there. And that community responded with acceptance and affection.
Peter was a hard-working man who made friends easily and had a passion for cars, trucks, and heavy equipment. Thanks to a varied working career, he was very multi-skilled. A mechanic by trade, he worked for the Government of NB (Soils Department), was owner and operator of a service station on the corner of Cliff and Union Streets, and also worked for Fairview Plymouth, J.D. Irving Woodlands, and was co-owner of Creek Contracting. In retirement, he had many more work adventures with Tri-Wire Company.
And if he was multi-skilled in his work, his personal interests were just as wide ranging. Drag racing, handy man hobbies, even a hobby farm when his girls were young. He loved animals, loved the beach, and especially loved salt water and waves. Vacations, adventures, road trips, camping trips, Peter loved traveling with family and friends around the province and beyond. He especially loved to explore back roads and go for a good brunch out. There was never a road he was afraid to take, a task he was afraid to tackle. He was the kind of man who would do anything for family and friends, always ready to help anyone who needed a hand. He gave so much of his time anyone who needed it. There are those who say that he was the salt of the earth and would give anyone the shirt off his back.
Peter also had a passion for his family and friends. To say that he was a loving family man and faithful friend is an understatement. Larger than life, in personality and in any given room, he was a loving husband to Sheila, caring and compassionate father to his three daughters: Pam, Barb, and Teresa. And we can’t forget how he will live on—through the lasting legacy of the grandchildren he loved so dearly.
A real gentleman, Peter was an honest and caring man not only to friends, but anyone he encountered in life. His friends would happily attest to that. He was a great man to all who really knew him as he was—a very genuine person. Let all of us who remain behind after his passing not let him down, and remember who Peter J. Casey was in life.
Peter is survived by his wife, Sheila; their deeply loved daughters, Dr. Pamela Casey, Barbara Casey, and Teresa Casey (Troy); their beloved grandchildren, Anthony P. MacKinnon, Megan R.C. Brooks, and Owen P.C. Brooks; his brothers-in-law, Garth Herbert (Joan) and Chuck (Late Corrine) Harding; sisters-in-law, Shirley Gammon (Brad), Shirley (Late Alfred) Caissie, and Betty (Late Albert) Caissie; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends. In addition to his parents, Peter was predeceased by his brothers, Alfred and Albert Caissie; his in-laws, Aubrey and Marguerite Herbert; sister-in-law, Corinne Harding, and son-in-law, Patrick “Trackie” Brooks.
To the nurses on 4SW, who got to know Peter well over the past four years, we thank you, but there will never be enough gratitude given to you. Thank you to Dr. Karyn Broad, Dr. H. Redstone, Dr. Blythe, Dr. Goodyear, Dr. C. Roussell, and Dr. E. Lane. To the exceptional and wonderful Extra Mural Nurses, especially Krista and Darlene, and all the nurses in between—we love you, thank you, and appreciate all you have done. Thanks again.
