The passing of Peter Grasman, husband of
the late Elizabeth Grasman of Fredericton occurred on Monday, June 12,
2023 at Thomas Hall in Fredericton after a period of declining
health.
Born in Hilaard, NL on May 4th, 1944,
he was the son of the late Symen and Janke Grasman of Brampton,
ON.
Peter is survived by his children Scott (Mary), Ian (Andrea),
and Heather (Joe), grandchildren David, Jack, Bridget, Peter, and
Annie; brothers Bert (Rika), Klancy (Leona), Steve (Rina); sisters
Anne (late Art), Wilma (late John), Helen, Susan, and Marianne (Del);
a special sister-in-law, Mary Atkinson; and many nieces and
nephews.
In addition to his parents, Peter was pre-deceased by
Elizabeth, his wife of 52 years in 2018 and his Atkinson
in-laws.
Peter was a survey engineering technician by profession and
retired in 2008 as the Manager of the Roads & Streets Division
after a long career with the City of Fredericton. He was a longtime
member and volunteer for several industry associations, including the
New Brunswick Chapter of the Canadian Public Works Association, and he
served as the secretary/treasurer for several years with the New
Brunswick Asphalt User Producers Group. For many years, Peter was a
member of the Gentle Shepherd Church.
Peter was a hard worker and active throughout his
life and especially enjoyed long daily walks with friends and retired
colleagues. He enjoyed carpentry, and with the help of friends and
family, built their family cottage and garage at French Lake where
they enjoyed many summer days on the water. He was a lifelong baseball
and sports fan and enjoyed playing golf and softball in his younger
years. He especially enjoyed listening to traditional country music
and attended several concerts featuring his favourite performers
George Jones and Merle Haggard with his sons and friends. Peter was
devoted to his family and will be remembered with love by them for his
quiet strength, work ethic, and decency. In recent years, Peter faced
several health challenges, but lived with a positive attitude and
dealt with his illnesses with courage and stoicism while maintaining
his wry sense of humour.
The family wish to thank the caregivers, nurses, and all of
the staff of Brunswick Hall and since October 2021, Thomas Hall for
their kindnesses and care shown to Peter while he was a
resident.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June
16th 2023 from 12-1:30pm at Bishop’s
Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Road. A service celebrating
Peter’s life will be held at 2:00pm from the funeral home
chapel with Peter’s dear brother-in-law, Deacon Delbert
Allan officiating. Interment to follow in the Forest Hill Cemetery,
Fredericton.
For those who wish, the family would appreciate donations in
Peter’s memory to The Alzheimer Society (Lewy Body Dementia)
or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
