Obituary
On Friday, August 4, 2023, Opal Firth (née Weatherbee) died peacefully in the palliative care unit at Ross Memorial Hospital after a fall in her home on July 31. Opal was a loving wife of 57 years to Burns Firth (died 2007) and a supportive and loving mother to Valerie and Rick (Vinicius), both of Toronto, a sister to Myrna in Moncton, New Brunswick, and an aunt to many nieces and nephews. Opal was predeceased by her son David; grandson Steven; parents Richard and Rose Weatherby; brothers Elmer, Elton, Leo, and Lionel; and sisters Irene, Margaret, and Dorothy. Opal’s was a life well lived for 95 years. Born and raised on the family farm in Williamsdale, Nova Scotia, Opal moved to Toronto in 1948, where she met David Burns Firth, and they married in 1950 at St. Paul’s Bloor Street. Before their retirement to Lindsay, Ontario, in 1986, Opal was active in her church, St. Timothy’s By the Humber Anglican. In Lindsay, she volunteered with the Canadian Cancer Society and with the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Opal enjoyed crocheting and was an avid ceramist. Rest well mum, we will miss you. At Opal’s request, there will be no funeral. For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Hospice Palliative Care Ontario at www.hpco.ca.
