MICHAEL DOMAN OBITUARY
DOMAN, MICHAEL HUGH GEOFFREY – Passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and listening to his favourite music, Handel’s Messiah, at the Collingwood Nursing Home on Wednesday, March 1, 2023. Michael was born in Oxford, UK, and grew up in Southampton, UK, where he apprenticed in engineering, working in various places across the UK before leaping into the fledgling computer industry in 1968 with Honeywell Information Systems, eventually becoming a VP of Marketing.
It was through Honeywell that Michael, his wife Gillian (Gill), and their young family had the opportunity to move to Canada in 1977, settling in Thornhill, Ontario. Michael and Gill eventually retired to Sidney, BC, on Vancouver Island in 1997, where Michael pursued his passion of captaining his 36ft sailboat, “Dulcinea”, around the waters of Vancouver Island, including a circumnavigation in 2010.
Michael was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2001, still, never one to slow him down, he came out of retirement to first volunteer with, then lead the Victoria Epilepsy and Parkinson’s Centre Society’s charitable efforts until his health prevented him from continuing. One famous charity event he organized involved a lottery where numbered golf balls were dropped from a helicopter requiring a fair bit of advanced approval to get off the ground. Outside of sailing and his charitable efforts, the love of his life was his wife, Gill, along with their three sons, Andrew (Anne-Marie), Stephen, and James, and their seven grandchildren; Cassandra, Christopher, Nicholas, Emily, Matthew, Robert, and Grace, who Michael adored immensely.
Predeceased by his sister Ruth (Bob Sinclair), Michael leaves his sisters Mary and Sarah (Alan Fisk) in the UK, along with many good friends across Canada and the UK. Michael will be remembered for his love of classical music and opera, along with many memorable times on sailing trips with family and friends. A huge thank you to everyone at both the Saanich Peninsula Long Term Care Home, and the Collingwood Nursing Home where he spent the last year and a half after moving back to Ontario to be nearer family.
Cremation has taken place with a family service to be announced at a future date when the family can all gather to celebrate Michael’s well-lived life. Farewell Michael, and in the words of Tennyson’s sailor in Crossing the Bar – “Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, when I embark”. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Parkinson Canada would be appreciated.
