Obituary
Melvin Fredrick Wells, born November 23, 1930, passed away peacefully February 11, 2023 at the age of 92. From an early age, Melvin knew that farming was his passion. While still living on his parent’s farm, he rented and worked neighbors land, followed by working a few years in Calgary to finance his plans. A man of many talents, he could design, build, and repair equipment to suit farming needs. In 1954, at his only sister’s wedding, he met his wife to be, Violet Davis. In 1957 they married, raising 4 children. Always willing to help friends and neighbors with everything from moving belongings to buying a car, he loved being involved in buying and selling equipment and attending auctions.
Melvin was very active in his church where his sense of humor was discovered by the pastor, who convinced him he would be an excellent speaker if he could overcome his stage fright. After some time in Spokesmen’s club, he became a natural with a terrific sense of humor that would have the audience in tears with his repertoire.
A motorcycle enthusiast since his youth, Melvin enjoyed the outdoors, snowmobiling and travelling. With Violet and dear friends, they spent many years travelling south for the winter months.
Friends and family members have many fond memories of crazy antics, usually involving motorcycles, snowmobiles or some homemade contraption, countless day trips and camping trips to the mountains for biking and snowmobiling. Melvin was also fond of fires, occasionally a little too fond, which provided ample excitement from time to time.
Always with an eye towards the humorous side of life’s trials and tribulations, he would remind us that things could be worse following any mishap. He always enjoyed visiting, looking forward to events and hosting guests.
Melvin is survived by Violet, his wife of 65 years; daughter Laurie (Wayne); sons Dale (Guylaine), Larry (Thomasina), and Michael; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Melvin was predeceased by his parents Eleanor and Lester, sister Eileen, and grandson Darcy.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Ponoka Funeral Home on Thursday, February 23, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. followed by a reception at St. Mary’s Anglican Church Hall (adjacent to Funeral Home).
