May 9, 1942 – August 5, 2023
A proud matriarch, with a generous heart and a brilliant mind. She was an avid patron of the arts, a connoisseur of fine scotch and a devotee of kitchen gadgets. Marion died peacefully at home on August 5th after 81 years.
Marion shared her bountiful life with her high school sweetheart Don, to whom she was married for 58 years. Their resilient, supportive partnership was felt by all who had the privilege of gracing their kitchen table where stories of the couple’s world travels, latest achievements of their grandchildren and Marion’s endless supply of artisanal cheeses flowed. Together they raised three children: Andrew, Carole, and Sarah – who’s lives she guided with patience, optimism, and much love.
Marion had immense joy welcoming each one of her grandchildren with hand knit sweaters, personalized quilts, and the utmost gratitude. Edwyn, Georgia, Emma, Felix, Leo, Liliana, Dana, and Pia were cherished, celebrated, and championed by their beloved Grandmother. They will remember crawling into her king-sized bed (fit for heaps of children) on early summer break mornings, to be wrapped up by the smell of Marion’s Shea butter and their grandmother’s loving arms. During the days she passed on important skills such as casting on a stitch, licking Kitchen-Aid beaters, grooming poodles on the kitchen table, making the perfect egg-in-a-cup, consignment shop grazing, and organizing one’s extensive mug collection. Her grandkids will look back at the trips to museums, art galleries, concerts, ballets, cottages, beaches and more as exemplars of their Grandma’s love of spending time with them. More simply put, she is remembered for just her love for bringing her whole family together. They will think of her in all of their accomplishments to come because no one else could admire even the most minor feats the way their Grandma admired theirs.
Her children’s partners Sharon Boucher, Melanie Scholz and Mario Fortunato were loved, supported, and enriched by their relationships with their Mother-in-law. Her drive and intent to include them in her family went to great lengths and spanned many provinces. Her children thrived as parents because of this.
Marion was a steadfast volunteer, supporter, and promoter of the Dog Guides Foundation. She helped foster nineteen poodles and one lab through their dog guide foster parent program. Marion took great pride in knowing many of her dogs ultimately graduated and become a vital part of people’s lives.
Born and raised in Toronto in the Bloor West Village. She attended Humberside Collegiate where she made some dear lifelong friends. Marion proudly graduated from the Registered Nursing program at Toronto General Hospital and later earned her diploma in public health nursing from the University of Toronto. Nurse Marion enjoyed home visits with new mothers and their young families. Later in her career, Marion thrived as a continuing care co-ordinator with Home Care, especially in her many years working with the community at Northwestern General Hospital.
Marion greatly enjoyed sharing her love of language and literature with numerous book clubs. She appreciated the insightful discussions they often generated. Quilting was also a lifelong passion, inspiring international trips to learn from experts in the field and find the perfect fabric to suit her next creative endeavour. Marion was an active, dedicated member of York Heritage Quilt Guild, Markham Towne Quilters guild and The Betweens group. She took great pride in creating gorgeous, unique quilts for her family and for special projects. Marion will be greatly missed by her quilting friends near and far.
Being the sole daughter in a family with four children Marion had a special bond with her father. She is survived by her younger brother Howard Lee and predeceased by brothers Gordon and Stuart Lee, and grandson Leo Donald Fortunato as well as her parents Bernice Clapp and Frank Spencer Lee.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Ogden Funeral Home.
