Lorraine Mary Thoms (nee Parsons)
January 26th, 1954 – April 1st, 2023
It is with great and profound sadness that the family of the late Lorraine Mary Thoms of Gander announce her sudden passing at the James Paton Memorial Hospital on Saturday April 1st, 2023 at the young age of 69, surrounded by family. A loving and amazing wife, mother, grand-mother, sister, aunt and friend, Lorraine was a kind and warm hearted person who had a positive impact on all who knew her.
Predeceased by her parents James Parsons and Janet Parsons (nee Roberts). Left to mourn are husband Herb, son Billy (Chelan), daughters Jenni and Michelle (Mathew), two lovely grand-daughters Stella and Giada, sisters Donna Hancock (Brian) and Carolyn Jagat (Madhu), brother Jimmy Parsons (Penny), sisters-in-law Wendy Nebucett (Alfred), Carolyn Hanlon (Raymond), brother-in-law Murk, nieces Mandy, Tracy, Samantha, Olivia, Hannah, Pamela, Penny, Wendy, Alana and Leah, nephews Brian, Peter and Andrew, and many more relatives and friends.
Lorraine was born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, but called Labrador City home, where she met her husband Herb, the younger brother of one of her best friends. She moved to Gander in 1989 and has been a part of her community in countless ways. An animal lover her entire life and proud supporter of the Gander and Area SPCA, she adopted numerous animals that became a loving part of her family. In the past, Lorraine volunteered with the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog program with Dusty, her Yellow Labrador, where they would frequently visit Lakeside Homes.
Her strong work ethic, love of learning, and positive attitude allowed her to work in many different roles. She worked as a professional secretary for multiple offices (utilizing her french language skills) and as an administrative clerk with the military. She took a break from employment to raise her three wonderful children. Seeking a new challenge, Lorraine worked as a family support worker and finally a home support worker before retiring in 2014.
Lorraine, an energetic and lively person, was an avid swimmer, line dancer, walker and gardener. She was an active member of the Gander Community Garden and she enjoyed planting with the elementary students from Gander Academy.
She loved the outdoors, having spent many summers camping with her family and in recent years, spending time at her cabin on Flat Island, where she could berry pick, apple pick, fish and enjoy time with her neighbours. Her already wonderful baking skills were heightened with the berries and the apples she collected from this beautiful island. She enjoyed cross-country skiing while living in Labrador City and in recent years was getting back into it.
She loved travelling across the country, which she did multiple times with her husband and dog Duke, exploring most provinces and loving the opportunity to chat with all the people she met along the way.
Lorraine was a wonderful person who loved helping others. She was the bright light in her family and will be dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Gander and Area SPCA.
The family would like to thank the Emergency and Critical Care staff at the James Paton Memorial hospital for their support and kindness and for making a difficult time more bearable.
There will be no internment.
