Obituary
Leonard Roger Smith passed away peacefully surrounded by love on January 10, 2023 just shy of his 75th birthday. Born in Bishop Falls, Newfoundland, son of the late Max and Ruby (Burge) Smith. Stepson to Esau Burge.
Len is survived by the “love of his life” beloved wife Darlene Smith (Haskett) of 32 years; father to Sherry (Robin) Wilker, Tim (Jodilynn) Taylor, Darlene Smith, Chris (Lisa) Taylor, Kim (Brad) Kraemer and Andrew (Amy) Taylor. Len will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Justin (Alex) Wilker and Rebecca (Jacob) Patterson, Brittany (Matt) Paton and Wyatt Taylor (Keeley), Brandon, Brent and Jessica Boreham, Nicholas and Samantha Taylor (Shawn), Courtney Boreham, Bradley (Amber) and Jada Kraemer, Lauren and Ella Taylor. Len also touched the lives of his great grandchildren Noah, Bailee, Brody, Blake, Sloane and Beau.
Len is also survived by his siblings Gerald Smith (Chris), Elizabeth (Betty) Pottle, William (Dale) Smith (Joyce), Victor Smith (Eileen), Alex Burge (Tammy), Judy Bogle (Colin) Wayne Burge (Phyllis), Marilyn Maddock (Gerry) and Thomas Burge (Dora) and will be missed by many nieces and nephews.
Len was predeceased by his brothers Elmo Smith and Harvey Burge, brother in laws Cecil Pottle and John Simone, sisters in law Peggy Smith and Maryann Clark.
Len will be remembered most for his love of old country music particularly Johnny Cash, camping where he entertained family and friends around the campfire with his beautiful voice and self taught guitar playing and his devotion to his family and friends. Those that knew him experienced a generosity that was boundless as he was always going the extra mile to help anyone. Len spent time woodworking building potato boxes, benches etc. Len found a new skill and love in his retirement where he enjoyed painting and through this painting he continued to brighten peoples lives in the homes he painted. His move to Forest road allowed Len to build more friendships but also to perfect his grass cutting skills as he would practice every other day on his lawn and many of his neighbours. As the seasons changed, the lawn mower was replaced with a snowblower and he quickly became the neighbourhood alarm clock as he was out blowing snow in the early morning. Len was special in many ways and those who had the privilege to spend time with him will forever be changed.
Visitation will take place at the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron Street, Stratford on Sunday, January 15, from 5-8 p.m. and on Monday, January 16, 2023 at Avondale United Church, 194 Avondale Avenue, Stratford from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to Children’s Hospital – London Health Science Centre or the Canadian Lung Association
