May 14, 1924 – July 28, 2023
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our much-loved mother, mother-in-law, nonni, bisnonna, zia, cousin & friend, Lena Dorigo,
on July 28, 2023, at the age of 99 at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto.
Lena was born in Copper Cliff, Ontario, on May 14, 1924, the youngest of nine children. Wife of Victor Dorigo (predeceased 1989), loving mother of seven daughters: Barbara (Tom, Toronto), Debbie (Ed, Waterloo), Nancy (John, Ottawa), Anne Marie (Toronto), Angela (Paul, Toronto), Dayle (Robert, Ottawa), Dawn (Toronto). Cherished Nonni to Jon (Sarah), Jeff, Cameron, Julia, Mia, Eva and Francesca. Special Bisnonna to Hannah and Penelope.
Daughter of Agostino and Italia (Volpato) Cecchetto (predeceased).
Dear sister to Mary Cassio (Romano), Elena Watson (Lloyd), Aduino/Chic (Elsie), Edward (Phyllis), Zelino, Alfred/Fats (Marg), Armaldo/Malo (Mary), and Olindo (Evelyne) (all predeceased). Dear sister-in-law to Bernard and Nerina Dorigo and Alice Cecutti (all predeceased).
A longtime resident of Barlow Street, Sudbury, Lena lived a long life rich in family and friends.
She was blessed with a beautiful singing voice which gave her much pleasure throughout her life. Outings to concerts, casinos, playing cards, celebrating birthdays and family gatherings were some of the activities regularly enjoyed with her lifelong friends, daughters and grandchildren. Lena took great interest in her daughters’ and grandchildren’s lives through many visits and updates, always wanting the latest news. She was well known for her epic (pie) baking skills which are next to impossible to emulate! She amazingly continued with her crossword puzzle skills along with her quick trigger when viewing Wheel of Fortune & Jeopardy in her 99th year. Lena’s petite stature belied her feisty spirit and strong will, which undoubtedly contributed to her longevity. She had ‘spunk’, as they say.
Lena moved to The Walford Retirement Residence in Sudbury in 2011 and then transitioned to her last residence at Meighen Manor in Toronto in 2017 to be closer to her daughters.
Her fun-loving nature was still evidenced at her recent 99th birthday celebration in May when she participated in singing and dancing, truly enjoying the moment.
Thank you to the many wonderful caregivers and staff Lena encountered during her time at both the Walford and Meighen Manor. Your kindness and thoughtfulness made a big difference in her life, and we are forever grateful.
Thank you, also, to the medical staff at Sunnybrook Hospital for the expert care provided, including Dr. Naushin Walji, the team of nurses and Chaplain John Zamiska.
A heartfelt thank you to Barlow Street neighbours, Gloria and the late Phil Frawley and nieces Gloria Cassio and Melinda Dozzi for their kind, helpful support over the years.
Private family arrangements have been made. In memory of Lena, donations to salvationarmy.ca (Donate to a Specific Location, select Ontario, scroll to Meighen Manor) would be greatly appreciated.
Online condolences may be extended at morleybedford.ca
