Obituary for
Katarzyna “Kathy” Czarnecki (née Fornal)
Kathy Czarnecki passed away peacefully on Friday, January 20, 2023, at the age of 101 years. She was born in Huzele, Poland on January 1, 1922.
During the second world war, Kathy was taken from her home to work as a farm labourer in Austria. As a refugee, she made her way to Italy where she met her future husband, Leon, who was serving with the Allied forces. They moved to England where Leon was stationed with the Polish Resettlement Corps, before immigrating to Canada and settling in Edmonton, Alberta, where they raised their family.
Kathy and Leo loved dancing and won many dance competitions. Kathy worked with Hudson’s Bay Company, where she had many friends and was known for her party planning. Kathy was very sociable and loved to travel to visit relatives in New York and Poland. She loved going to church and always tried to help those in need. She will surely be missed by all who knew her.
Left to cherish her loving memory is her daughter, Christina Filbey; son, Robert; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Kathy will be especially missed by her nieces, Irene Cepin and Helen Kohut.
She was predeceased by her husband, Leon; sons, Richard, Stanley and Edward; parents, Stanley and Mary; and brothers, Anthony, Michael, John and Karl; and sister, Sophie.
A Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church in Edmonton. Reverend Mieczyslaw Burdzy, OMI officiated with interment in Holy Cross Cemetery.
