Joseph Miles
of Mulgrave, Nova Scotia
December 26, 1937 – February 22, 2023
It is with great sorrow that the Miles family announce the passing of their beloved husband, father and grandfather, Joseph Miles, 85, of Mulgrave. Joe passed away with his family by his side on February 22, 2023 at St Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish.
Born in Little Bay East, NL, Joe was the son of the late Aaron and Alice (Scott) Miles. He moved to Halifax with his family in the early 1950’s, and later that decade to Mulgrave where he first worked as a cook on fishing draggers and where he met his lifelong love, Mary. He spent several years working with Acadia Fisheries and was also Dockmaster at Point Tupper Shipyards. In 1972, he joined Stora as a carpenter and remained there until his retirement in 1997.
Joe was a gifted carpenter and was well known for his custom cabinet-making, award-winning Stora Floats, and his flawless craftsmanship with every project.
He enjoyed retirement fully, using the time to travel, continue his woodworking, and develop new hobbies like winemaking and golfing, and spending time with his grandchildren, who were his pride and joy.
He was a quiet, kind and gentle soul, a true gentleman, and despite his many health issues in recent years, never one to complain and he continued to make the most of each day. He loved spending time in his workshop, feeding the birds, playing his guitar, and enjoying a fun game of crib. He always had a book on the go, a furry friend nearby, and loved to watch westerns and old comedies. He also loved to cook for gatherings with family and friends.
Joe will be deeply missed by Mary, his loving wife of 60 years; daughters Barbara, Krista (Blair) Kendall, Ottawa ON; son Joseph (Debra), Calgary AB; and grandchildren Megan, Natalie and Taylor. Also left to mourn are his sisters Mary Pope, Port-aux-Basques NL, and Bertha (Lewis) Jamieson, Hadleyville NS, brother Lloyd, Port Shoreham NS, and a large circle of nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters Abby Price and Dorothy Harding, and brothers Fred, Ernest, Reginald and Hubert.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Joe’s health care team: Dr. Mark Walsh, Dr. Glenn Gallivan, Dr. Marion Che, and the staff of Continuing Care, Home Care, and St. Martha’s Hospital Palliative Care. We are indebted to all of you for the kind and compassionate care you provided and to our wonderful friends and neighbors, always there to visit or lend a hand.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral Mass will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Mulgrave, Father Allan MacPhie officiating. Masks required. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Mulgrave and Area Resting Place or the St. Lawrence Parish CWL. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com
