Obituary for
Job Dewland
It is with great sorrow that we regret to inform you of the passing of Job Dewland on January 27th,2023 at the age of 93. He passed peacefully away in the presence of his oldest son at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Care Centre.
He was born in Pushthrough, Newfoundland. He was born without a father because his father and grandfather drowned before his mother had given birth. So to say he had a rough start is an understatement. He grew up poor and hungry. That may explain why he bought everything in bulk. He wasn’t going to be hungry again. He moved from there to Gaultois where he worked for Gaultois Fisheries as a welder for many years and formed a vast array of lifetime friends. He and Patsy started a family and from there they moved to Bay D’Espoir and he started a job with Newfoundland Hydro which he stayed with until he retired.
When Patsy became ill with kidney failure, they left their home once again and moved to Grand Falls so she could be near a hospital for treatments. It was a sacrifice he was willing to make for her.
To say he retired is another understatement because he worked constantly on his house, which he built himself. He also had a welding machine and was always fixing things for anyone who asked. He was constantly welding things, from metal or using his carpentry skills and building boats. Big ones at first and then model boats, copying ones that had sailed into Gaultois.
He was also a long-time member of the Milltown Lions Club in Bay D’Espoir, which he shared with a large group of friends. He loved a good game of cards on a Saturday night.
One of his biggest passions was his cabin in Furby’s Cove. Him and Patsy would pack up on Friday and head on out there for the weekend. He didn’t stop much while there. Peddling around until mug up time. Three o’clock on the dot and his friend and neighbor Karl would be right on his tail. That was their happy place.
We would be remiss if we didn’t include the fact that he had nicknames for everyone. So we will only include the children: Joan: Siddy Kaneros, Roger: Manny bird, Jeff: Jeffie butch, Job: gingie. Don’t ask where they came from but he had a knack for it.
Left to mourn his children; Joan, Roger (Donna), Jeff (Jackie), Job (Bernice); brother in law, Fred Wells(Joyce). Also left to mourn are his grandchildren; Tracy Morrison (Hugh), Jessica McDougall-Richard (Gerry), Patti Oram(Mark),Curtis Dewland(Alisha), Robyn Dewland-Organ(Martin),Justin Dewland(Laura),Job Dewland IV, Andrew Dewland and Jennifer Dewland(Kevin) as well as 15 great grandchildren. He will be eternally missed by his family and all his close friends in Gaultois, Bay D’Espoir, Furby’s Cove and Grand Falls; Too numerous to mention.
He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Patsy Dewland (Wells), his mother, Martha Dewland(Lily), Ernest Crant, his sisters, Mary Kearley, Rose Piccott (Garfield).
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service and celebration of life will take place at Christchurch, Milltown, NL on July 20th, 2023, alongside his loving wife, Patsy.
As an expression of sympathy donations may be made to Christ Church Cemetery Fund, Milltown or a charity of one’s choice. Such a gesture would be greatly appreciated by the family.
“When the Lord calls our loved ones home, He leaves a gift of memories.”
God Speed, Dad!
