After a long and fearless fight with stage 4 cancer, Joao Soares passed away peacefully on March 23 at age 70 surrounded by his sons and loving wife.
Joao was born in Terceira in his hometown of Feteira where he resided for most of his single life. At the ripe age of 24 he married the love of his life Ines and they were happily married for 45 years. After the birth of his three beautiful children, he made the difficult decision to leave the life he knew and immigrated to Canada in pursuit of better opportunities for his young family in 1987.
After three difficult years he was able to bring his family to Canada where they began the courageous journey that so many of our Portuguese friends and relatives know so well. With the support of his sister and brother he was able to establish himself in Canada and purchased his first home in 1994.
Once settled Joao’s whole life was about family. His first-born Joao Daniel was his pride and joy. His little helper with a heart of gold. His son Paul, the second born, with a spirited and wild side kept him on his toes and was often his partner in crime. When he was blessed with his daughter Mara, he was never the same. This little girl stole his heart and was the reason his eyes sparkled.
He was blessed with 9 beautiful grandchildren. JJ, Ilisa, Lucas, Emily, Aydan, Ava-Rose, Elizabeth, Isabella and little Scarlet. This was the final transition from hardcore tough guy to big old softy.
He was also blessed with two daughter in laws Ana and Michelle who he quickly adopted into his heart as his own daughters. His son-in-law Manny was also quickly welcomed into the family when he married his only daughter.
He was famously known for his love of Benfica, bullfights and carnival dances. Celebrating these festivities led to many memories with his family, including his many nieces and nephews. These traditions were the glue of his family and will house memories in all our hearts for eternity.
Joao is survived by his wife Ines, three children John, Paul and Mara, daughter-in-law’s Ana and Michelle and son in law Manny. He is also survived by his 3 grandsons and 6 granddaughters. His older sisters Fatima and Odete and sister-in-law Esperanca. Joao will be reunited with his parents, brother Antonio and two brothers-in-law Joao and Antonio.
In lieu of flowers you may make a donation in memory of João to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Visitations will take place at the Vescio Funeral Home “Toronto Chapel” (2080 Dufferin St.) on Sunday March 26th, 2023, from 2-4pm and 6-9pm.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 27th, 2023, at 10:00am at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church (1041 Bloor ST. W Toronto). Entombment to follow at Park Lawn Cemetery (2845 Bloor St. W, Etobicoke).
