Obituary
Passed away peacefully with family at his side on Tuesday, September 12th, 2023 at Carpenter Hospice in Burlington, ON. Born January, 17th, 1930 at Dundalk, ON, son of James Clarence Lonsway and Neta Joy Mills. Predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years, Catherine Livingstone Lonsway (Chisholm). Survived by son Iain James (Carol Van Beilen), daughter Alison (Paul Dills), and daughter Mary (Thomas Steckner). Also survived by seven grandchildren – Annika and Emily Lonsway, Laura and Sarah Dills, Emma, Julia and Jacob Steckner. Also predeceased by his brother Bruce (Pauline) in London, ON and sister Gwen Wiltshire (Ivan) in Dundalk, ON.
Jim was raised on a 200-acre farm south of Dundalk until age of 16. He graduated from Dundalk District High School, Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture (1956), and Michigan State University where he earned a Masters of Science degree in Horticulture (1957). His entire working career was spent in the Canadian horticulture industry, employed by Roy A. Nicholson Ltd. of Burlington, Yoder/Atkin Ltd. of Leamington and later as production manager for the Vermeer family, Westbrook Greenhouses Ltd. of Grimsby/Beamsville. For 47 years, beginning in 1961, Jim and Cathie were year-round members of Cedar Springs Community, following which they retired to downtown Burlington. Jim was an ardent gardener throughout his life having first been introduced to growing flowers at a very early age by his paternal grandmother. His garden was a passion and it was often said, with great truth, he was a much better gardener than golfer. Immediately after retirement he was asked to take over the supervision of the Conservatory at the Burlington Art Centre as a volunteer where he could be found each Monday and Friday morning for 12 years with his staff of volunteers. Jim loved to travel, as did Cathie, and during their years together they visited every province in Canada as well as many countries in Europe, the UK, Australia and New Zealand.
Visitation will be held at KITCHING, STEEPE & LUDWIG FUNERAL HOME, 146 Mill St. N, Waterdown on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2023 from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the University of Guelph or Carpenter Hospice in Burlington.
