Jake was born on April 7, 1931 in El Trebol, Durango. He was the youngest of seven siblings. In 1953 at the young age of 22, Jake brought his mother, brother, and five sister’s to Canada to build a more prosperous life. His family settled down in Emerson, Manitoba but eventually he moved on to Estevan, SK. It was there that his dream of building his own construction business was fulfilled, Jakes Construction.
In 1973 he obtained a contract with the Town of Hudson Bay to build 50 homes in a new development area. Jake and his family packed up their belongings, a mobile home, a renovated bus and a crew of men ready to work. They were cramped but it was what they called home. Later on in life, Jake was able to build a beautiful home for his family on Donald Street.
Jake’s Construction continued to grow over the years. He built numerous homes in and around Hudson bay including cabins at Ruby Lake, The Town Hall, the public swimming pool and churches to name only a few. Any street you drove down you could point out something Jake built. He took great pride in his concrete work, as he would say it was his favorite job to do.
Jake spent the cold Saskatchewan winters in Mazatlán, Mexico, his home away from home. You could usually find Jake at Costo de Ora for happy hour or Tony’s on the Beach with all of his great friends he made over the years. These friends become a second family to Jake. Jake would take great pride sharing stories and photos of his adventures in Mazatlán. Especially of his countless friends he made each trip.
Unfortunately, he had to retire in 2018 at the age of 87, due to his declining health. He sold what he held dear to him, his cabin and his shop and made the move to Saskatoon. He resided with his daughter Brenda until his peaceful passing surrounded by family.
Jake is survived by his special friend Janet, his children (In order of oldest to youngest) Brenda, Charlene, Jackie, Cheryl, Jody, Myles and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his eldest son Jerry who recently passed on February 18, 2023.
Jake, Dad, Grandpa, dear friend, you will be profoundly missed by oh so many near and far. The beach may not have as many laughs, the streets may not be built as they should. A seat may be empty at the Desrocher VLT’s, and hearts may forever ache, but his stories will continue to be told, his laugh will always be heard, his warmth and strength will always be felt and his smile, that famous Jake smile will always be forever remembered.
