Irene Thelma Gibson
(née Innes)
Peacefully at home on March 11th, 2023. Irene was born June 9, 1925 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Herdis Petrina (Pete) and Lorne Harrison Innes. Irene was predeceased by her beloved husband James (Jim) Alistair Gibson. Will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her children James (Alison), Margaret, Paul (Nancy), Lisa (Rod), Virginia (Martin) and Stephen, as well as 6 grandchildren, 8 1/2 great grandchildren (there is another on the way). Loving sister to Margaret (Henry), James and Cecil (Phyllis). Irene will also be missed by a whole bunch of much-loved extended family.
Irene was an angel of positivity, warmth and strength to her husband and family. Her smile lit up our hearts. She was a kind and loyal friend to many.
Irene attended Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute in Winnipeg where she excelled at high jumping. She worked as a bookkeeper at Western Packing and then at the Dominion Bank for approximately 10 years after high school before marrying Jim. Irene and Jim met at the St. Patrick’s Anglican Church Youth-over-Twenty Club and after they married moved to Flin Flon, Manitoba where all six children were born within the next 10 years and where Irene began her very best work ever as a mother and homemaker (a career at which she also excelled and loved) and where Jim worked as a Geologist. There was a brief return to Winnipeg where Irene was happy to reconnect with family and friends, then on to Toronto where Irene made many new friends and continued to keep busy with her large family.
In Toronto, along with Jim, Irene was an active member of St. Timothy’s Anglican Church (Agincourt), and served for many years as Treasurer and in other capacities with both the C.D. Farquarson Community Association and the Icelandic Canadian Club of Toronto (ICCT). Irene and Jim also loved travelling; initially summer camping holidays and winter cross-country skiing trips in Ontario, then, later, trips farther afield all over the world.
Although Irene’s last year was challenging, she faced her struggles with courage and grace.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Timothy’s Anglican Church (Agincourt), 4125 Sheppard Ave. East, Scarborough, Ontario, on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at 1:00 p.m., to be followed by a reception at the church.
If so desired, donations may be made to LOFT Community Services, 15 Toronto St., 9th Floor, Toronto, ON, M5C 2E3.
