Obituary
It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Irene on December 27, 2022 at the Wetaskiwin Hospital and Care Centre where she had been a resident since 2016.
Irene was born in Neidpath, Saskatchewan, the second of five children. Irene and her brothers, Cleon, Leonard, and Harvey, and sister Lillian, were raised in Fort Macleod, Alberta, by their widowed mother, Helena Friesen.
As a young woman, Irene trained as a nursing aid. While working in Claresholm, Alberta, she met her future husband, Udo Vegter. Irene and Udo married in 1956, settling down in Claresholm, where their first two children were born. Eventually the family moved to Lacombe, then Ponoka, where Irene and Udo raised their four children. Irene had a gift for sewing, making many of her own and her children’s clothing over the years. She loved to knit, crochet, and craft. She also enjoyed baking, especially apple pies made with apples from the trees Udo grew in the backyard. She decorated many birthday cakes for her family over the years. Irene was often the one in the family to go to if you wanted information about the Friesen/Ensz family tree. Irene was also fond of Udo’s family in the Netherlands and France, visiting them with Udo and staying in touch with yearly Christmas greetings.
During her time as a resident at the Wetaskiwin Long Term Care Centre, Irene enjoyed interacting with staff and residents. She looked forward to taking part in almost every activity provided by the Recreation department which included Bingo games and Christmas concerts. Reading and puzzles were hobbies she continued in her room. Irene kept her eye out for residents she could greet or help in order to brighten their day and was known for her watchful eye on bed making in order to correct a sloppy “hospital corner”.
Irene will be deeply missed by her children, Donna (Bill), Allen, Janet, and Peter (Shauna), as well as her grandchildren Erin (Carl), Thomas, and Brittany. She will be remembered by her sister-in-law Thelma, numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
Irene was predeceased by her husband Udo, grandson Eric, and son-in-law Alan.
Cancer, Heart and Stroke, Diabetes, and Hemophilia were causes close to Irene’s heart if you wish to make a donation in remembrance.
