Grace Wagar was a wife, mother, writer, philosopher, amateur astronomer, and a huge advocate of education. (At any age!)
After raising her family, Grace returned to school and in June 1994 graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Queens University.
She loved her family enormously. She was a mother, a grandmother, and an aunt to anyone who needed one.
Grace disliked leaving home. Although, she was a willing passenger when Jim planned a road-trip somewhere warmer than here. But, in truth people sought Grace out as a haven of peace, and gratefully her door was always open.
Husband, Jim’s favorite response was, ‘let’s ask Grace what she thinks!’ Grace gave sensible advice with much grace-infused love, which typically meant a mirror and a healthy dose of sarcasm. Although, she could laugh at herself as much as with you, and it was always delivered with care, deep wisdom, and compassion, for she was a scholar in the school of survival.
Jim and Grace were a powerful duo. There wasn’t much they couldn’t get through together.
He was the jump-in-full throttle helper, up for any risk-taking world adventure! Grace never did anything she didn’t want to do. She matched him with her stable, always present, holding space, with a gigantic hug at home, and full-throttle belly laughs when you needed them. She led with heart. Which sometimes hurt more than she permitted you to see. She was stronger than maybe even she realized. And her strength met you with tears or laughs and prayers depending on what you needed in the moment.
When Jim worked away, she raised her family alone. Thankfully after he returned, they had many years of sharing in the love of watching their kids marry and grow their own families. Expanding the family with grandchildren was unmeasurably satisfying, not to mention visits from her daughter Leslie.
Grace loved music, reading historical fiction, sci-fi, thrillers, puzzle games, and time spent with her grandchildren.
The family gathered around Grace even more intently after Jim died. She commented that she loved hearing them all laugh before work each day when they dropped by to check in on her.
Recently she shared with friends the song, ‘To Love Somebody,’ with the lyrics;
There’s a light
A certain kind of light
I want my life to be lived with you
There’s a way everybody say
To do each and every little thing
But what does it bring
If I ain’t got you…
Today, while we grieve her death, we are not surprised that she chose to depart as she did. Quietly, gently, under a rare blue moon to be reunited with her husband Jim.
And off they went together on their infinite road trip.
Rest in eternal grace, Grace. We love you.
