Giuseppe Arnone peacefully passed away July 13, 2023, at the age of 95, with family at his side.
Giuseppe was predeceased by his loving wife Irene. Loving father to Mario (Lynn), Helen (Steve), and Andy (Denise); Cherished Nonno to grandchildren Ryan, Chris (Brianna), Andrew (Jill), Patrick (Heather), Robert (Aysha), Dylan (Hanna) and Cassidy (Riley) and great-grandchildren Damien, Xavier, Elizabeth, Leo and Axton. Dear brother to Carmelina (late Carmine); Predeceased by his dear sister Benedetta (late Giuseppe). Zio Peppino will be fondly and lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews.
Giuseppe was born in Cosenza, Calabria, Italy. In 1951 he came to Canada to work in the mines of northern Quebec but met a friend on the boat who convinced him to come to Ottawa. Giuseppe worked at the Chateau Laurier where he was befriended by the Italian pastry chef who appreciated his hard work and took him on as an apprentice. His pastry chef skills eventually brought him to Stewart’s Green Valley Restaurant where he worked for over 30 years delighting the patrons with his pies, birthday cakes & Mickey Mouse ice cream desserts.
In his younger years, Giuseppe played guitar with a band at the YMCA & St Anthony’s Hall dances where he met his wife Irene, it was love at first sight.
Giuseppe loved family. He enjoyed BBQ picnics and bocce, rousing games of Scopa and of course the family dinners and dances. Many times he would play his guitar and sing, invoking tears with a voice so pure. His grandchildren loved visiting Nonno and the younger they were, the bigger his smiles. Friends and family would regularly phone him to see how he was or drop by with Tim’s coffee and donuts. He treasured those visits and talked about them for days afterwards.
Giuseppe and Irene were able to spend their last years at home, thanks to the love and generosity of Steve Wilson. Steve kept Giuseppe engaged and as active as possible. He looked after his every need even sharing a shot of cognac before bedtime. The family is deeply indebted for Steve’s commitment and devotion.
Giuseppe and Irene were married for 67 years. The night before he passed away, he was calling out for her. They are now together again. Buona notte Papa mio.
Thanks to the caring staff at the Civic Hospital and the Bruyere Palliative wing of Saint-Vincent Hospital.
