Obituary
In Loving Memory of Gerald F. Mclean
1937 – 2023
The family of Gerald Francis Mclean, husband of Lois Mclean, are very saddened to announce his passing surrounded by his loving family, at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on June 9th, 2023, at the age of 85.
Born in Nelson, Miramichi, NB, on November 19th, 1937, he was the son of the late Robert Mclean and the late Angelina (Gallant) Mclean.
Gerald Francis Mclean is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Lois (Cable) Mclean; sister, Doreen Corcoran; and sons: Paul (Joyce), Danny (Rose), David (Suzanne), Gary, Kevin (Fran), and Jason. He is also survived by grandchildren: Shannon (Greg), Robby, Laura (Jason), Erin, Maggie (Tyler), Christopher (Jamie), Jordan, Garyth, Nancy (Emily), Ricky (Jessica), Krista, Courtney, Connor, Maya, and Samuel; as well as great-grandkids: Jaycee, Braden, Tyson, Evie, Emma, and Addie.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Robert Mclean; daughter, Nancy Mclean; and daughter-in-law, Sharon Mclean.
At an early age, Gerald enrolled in the RCAF as an engine technician where he served for 7 years working on Sabre Jets including the Golden Hawks aerobatic team that was based at CFB Chatham. Upon leaving the service in 1962, he began working at Acadia Forest Products and was a shift foreman when he left the mill in 1972 to begin a lengthy career as a business owner in the former town of Chatham. He was the first proprietor of Airport Esso, now the Petro on Highway 11. He also owned and operated 2 service stations, Midtown Esso, and Chatham Texaco in the mid to late 70’s. After getting out of the service station business he built and operated a radiator and muffler shop on the Gordon Road extension in the 80’s and 90’s.
He was an avid hobbyist and could build or fix just about anything, including building and flying several homebuilt airplanes, one of which is now on display at the N.B. Aviation Museum at the Miramichi Airport. The small Volkswagen engine-powered plane was a familiar sight and sound in the Miramichi sky for many years. His love of aviation-related things also led to him being a longtime volunteer member of the Canadian Aviation Search and Rescue Association (CASARA) where he got to fly in a CAF Hercules aircraft as a spotter on training exercises.
His true love was his family, and gatherings were a wonderful time with lots of stories and laughter and he loved a good game of cards, or a game of Pictionary and other board games. He was proud of his kids and grandkids and his wise advice on matters was always welcome.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Miramichi Regional Hospital in the Emergency Dept, 2 West, and the ICU, with special thanks to Dr. Slaney, Dr. Black, Dr. Abby, and Dr. Kruger, as well as to all the nurses, respiratory technicians, and his nurse in the ICU, Jennifer who showed great care and compassion in his final hours.
A Celebration of Life will occur at the Chatham Legion on Saturday, June 17th, 2023, from 2-5 PM.
In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to the N.B. Aviation Museum or to a charity of one’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
Arrangements are entrusted to Adams Funeral Home Ltd., 140 King St., Miramichi, NB, telephone (506) 773-3492. Additionally, messages of condolence may be shared online at www.adamsfh.ca
