Gerald Douglas “Gerry” Parker
1936-2023
Gerry died peacefully
in Valley Hospice, Kentville, Nova Scotia on January 2, 2023 due to
complications from Alzheimer’s.
Gerry was born in
Sherbrooke, QC, the son of the late Gault and Elaine (Rice) Parker, on
August 30, 1936. Growing up in nearby Drummondville, Gerry excelled in
school and demonstrated his many creative abilities from a very young
age whether it was playing piano or performing on stage with his
father. As a young child, Gerry also developed a lifelong passion for
drawing, painting and golf. After graduating from Acadia University in
1959, Gerry went on to receive an M.A. at Dalhousie and a PhD in
English from the University of Toronto. In 1965, Gerry accepted a
position teaching English at Western University in London, ON where he
moved with his first wife Janet (Kinsman) and daughter Suzanne. At
Western, Gerry was a much loved professor and performer and he was a
key figure in the promotion and development of both
Western’s Drama Workshop and Talbot Theatre. In 1995, Gerry
retired from Western and moved to Wolfville, NS with his second wife
Joan Chandler-Parker (Wickwire) where he continued his passions for
theatre and art. In addition to teaching courses at Acadia, Gerry
developed his own courses for the Acadia Lifelong Learning Program,
was chair of Will Power theatre company, and was a founding member of
the Acadia Cinema Board. Gerry will be missed by all for his
mischievous wit and sense of humour.
In addition to his
wife Joan, Gerry is survived by his daughter, Suzy Parker, Middleton,
NS; and his step-children, Davin Chandler (Brenda), Calgary; Patti
Church (Andy), Ottawa; Peter Chandler (Laura), Ottawa; and his
step-grandchildren, Carson, Kayla, James, Erin, Beatrice and Eleanor.
Gerry is also survived by his brother, Bill Parker (Margie) of
Wolfville, NS.
Many thanks to the
wonderful staff at Valley Hospice in Kentville, NS and also to care
givers Kate, Kirby and Sarah.
