Obituary
Gary Melvin Whidden, age 79 of Waterdown, passed away July 28th, 2023, at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington. Gary is predeceased by the love of his life, (Carol) Lynn Whidden (nee Brooks). He was a model of optimism and a proud supporter to daughters Keli Whidden (Mike), Leigh Whidden, and Aimee Whidden-Tilton. He was the “most valuable spectator” and fan of his grandchildren Brooklynn, Daneille, Keith, Julia, and Taylor. And, immensely proud to be a great grandpa to Rosalie.
Dearly missed brother to Joy Dunn, David Whidden (Cynthia), Donny Whidden, and Nancy Thompson (Gary). With fond remembrances for predeceased siblings Freddie, Marven, and Ronald (Tony).
A loving brother-in-law and uncle to many, for each of which he had loving words, thoughts, and many kind stories. He felt pain for their struggles and immense pride in their achievements. Nobody clapped louder for you than Gary.
Gary was a good friend with an infectious laugh. The family card shark who was (almost) unbeatable at crib and euchre. Although he frequently referred to himself as a loner, he was the first to take a walk around the trailer park to chat with folks, to strike up a card game or horseshoe round, chat about what was going on in your life, or get into a good natured but passionate conversation about world affairs. To many people he was “my favourite person” and someone to be looked up to. He called himself the luckiest guy on earth and might ask you for “5 bucks” for the pleasure of his presence.
He, along with Lynn were often the hub for family, helping whenever needed and hosting the events that made memories. Their close to 54-year marriage was an inspiration to all that knew them – they were sweethearts from the beginning and testament to true and lasting love.
Friends are invited to join the family for celebration of his life at KITCHING, STEEPE & LUDWIG FUNERAL HOME, 146 Mill St. N., Waterdown on Saturday, August 5th, 2023, from 2 – 4 pm. Private cremation has taken place.
