Gabrielle Helen Margaret Adams (née Harcsar), age 83, passed away at her home in Burlington, Ontario
on September 16, 2023. Gabrielle is survived by her sons, Nicholas (Beth) and Tom (Stephanie) and
grandchildren Finley, Max, Michelle, Sam and Rachel. Gabrielle will be greatly missed by all of her family
and friends.
Gabrielle emigrated from Hungary with her parents at the age of 9. She quickly became a star student,
attended McMaster University and eventually received a Ph.D. in cell biology from Carleton University.
Gabrielle joined the National Research Council of Canada in 1967. After her sons were born, she moved
from lab work to become Editor of the renowned Canadian Journal of Botany and ultimately went onto
become the Director General of the Institute for Biological Sciences at the National Research Council.
Gabrielle had a life-long appreciation for the outdoors and a love for animals. Whether at home or at
the family apple orchard, there was always a dog or two somewhere close by. Upon retirement,
Gabrielle moved to Burlington, Ontario where she spent time with her two sons and their families who
lived nearby as well as with friends near and far. She enjoyed long walks in the nearby Royal Botanical
Gardens where she was a longtime volunteer.
A service for Gabrielle will be held in Ottawa at Pinecrest Cemetery (2500 Baseline Road) on Saturday,
September 30th at 11:00 am with a reception to follow. Donations in Gabrielle’s memory can be made
to the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington.
