FUNK, Dolores

It is with sadness that the family of Dolores June Funk announces her peaceful passing on April 17, 2023, in Kelowna, British Columbia. Dolores was born on December 24, 1939, to John Arnold and Etta Viola Wood in Unity, Saskatchewan. She graduated from Unity Composite High School in 1957, and studied at Robertson Business College in Saskatoon, returning home after completing her program to work for the local accounting firm, Reid Cruthers. Soon after, Dolores met John Delmar (Del) Funk who was working at Beaver Lumber in Unity. Dolores and Del were married in Unity on July 1, 1961, and eventually settled in Lloydminster where they raised their three children: Lori, Cindy and Trevor.
In the early 1970s Dolores supplemented her business diploma with a professional accounting designation, studying by correspondence. She completed the first year exam with the highest mark in Alberta and travelled to Edmonton to receive the award which was presented by the Lieutenant Governor, Dr. Grant MacEwen. Over the years Dolores did payroll and bookkeeping for several companies, including Knight General Motors in St. Walburg; Skinner Motors, Harris Electric, Del Realty, and Darv’s Autobody in Lloydminster; as well as Alberta Central Air Ambulance which is based in Lac La Biche. She also worked for a number of years in the property tax department at the City of Lloydminster. Whenever Dolores was part of a community activity or service club such as the local Kinsmen or bridge club she was typically entrusted with the role of treasurer. The most responsible of her voluntary positions was a period of service as treasurer of the Kinsmen Telemiracle Foundation in the early 1980s.
Playing duplicate bridge was Dolores’s favorite pastime. She liked to win but mostly treasured fun times spent playing weekly club games, traveling to tournaments, and discussing hands with many bridge friends. She played bridge regularly up until 2018, retiring after qualifying for the Ruby Life Masters level from the American Contract Bridge League.
Dolores was skilled at needlepoint, quilting and crocheting. Many friends and family have been the beneficiaries of her beautiful creations. She was also an excellent piano and organ player, and a sports enthusiast who enjoyed cheering for her favorite teams.
Dolores was predeceased by her parents, as well as her sister and brother-in-law Mildred and Wayne Krips. She is survived by her ex-husband Del Funk; and her children Lori (John), Cindy (Mike) and Trevor (Lisa); her brothers Bill (Joanne) and Wayne (Judy); as well as her nieces, nephews and their families. She was a proud grandmother to Kara, Steven, Scott, Ivan, Louis, William, Nicole and Ty; and a great-grandmother to Rhéa and Arwen.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Kinsmen Telemiracle Foundation.
