Obituary of Evangeline Mary Barrett
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Evangeline (Vange) Barrett announce her passing on 11 February 2023. To many she was known as Queen, Vangie, one of the Golden Girls, Aunt Vange, Jaba, Nanny, Mudder and Mom.
Leaving to mourn is her daughter/best friend Patricia (Stephen), sons Tom (Margaret), Jean (Beverly); grandchildren: Grant, Brandon, Zachary, Keri, Nolan, Shannon, and Melissa; great grandson Fox and special grandchildren Joey and Alyson. She leaves behind her sister Genevieve, sisters-in-law Juliette (Sis) and Margaret, special nieces Valerie and Denise. Also left to mourn are the many nephews and nieces, extended family, and friends. She also leaves behind her fur babies Rosie and Maggie.
Evangeline was predeceased by her parents Evangeline and Frank Cornick. Siblings: Ben (Laura), Roderick (Nellie), Joseph (Grace), Matheren (Romeo), Nellie (Vince), Mary Ann (Felix), Alphonse, Francis, and brother-in-law Gerald Lavers.
Evangeline was born in Port au Choix, where she raised her family, worked at the postal office and as a mid-wife at Port Saunders hospital. She retired from a long career with Fishery Products International as the first female Quality Control Manager in NL fishery. Evangeline was loved and adored by everyone who knew her and was a friend to many. She enjoyed every opportunity to socialize with family and friends – everyone wanted to be in her company. She was known to enjoy a good dart tournament and will be remembered for her feather darts as well as her team antics. Later in life she was often glued to the TV watching Young and the Restless, Days of our Lives, the news and, of course, her favorite sports teams Maple Leafs and Blue Jays (often using a few selective words). Her family and friends will remember her for her sense of humour, comedic expressions, quick comebacks, and many stories (some of which were true). She never missed an opportunity to make someone smile. She had the biggest/kindest heart and was a great listener – if you were hurting, she was hurting. She loved life, family, wine, wings, and nachos (and hated any form of exercise).
Evangeline was a well respected, hard working, strong lady who was often referred to “as a fighter” and “a role model”. But her pride and joy – her proudest accomplishments were her three loving children.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the many healthcare professionals who provided such wonderful care and support over the past years – in hospital and in the community. A special thank you to Dr. Wadhwa and her devoted home care workers Barb and Tara. It is because of this support she was able to stay at home and live the life of a queen.
As per Evangeline’s final wishes, she will be cremated. To honour her memory, a celebration of her fabulous life will take place later in her hometown of Port Au Choix (date TBA).
In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be directed to the SPCA.
