Ernie’s Obituary
POTHIER, Ernie Joseph – Age 90 of Lower Wedgeport, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Thursday, April 6, 2023 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born on June 26, 1932 he was a son of the late George and Lydia (Cottreau) Pothier.
Ernie was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces for 10 years. After his CAF career he moved back to Wedgeport and worked as a lobster fisherman but he also enjoyed recreational fishing in his free time. Ernie will always be remembered for how knowledgeable he was, he had an incredible memory right up until the end. He enjoyed making jigsaw puzzles and going for drives.
He also volunteered at the Wedgeport Tuna Museum, and was a participant in the annual Tuna tournament until the age of 80. Ernie’s biggest joy was his family, he would say “I live for my family”, this was proven time and time again when he would check in on them whenever they travelled, making sure they made it safely. Ernie would also search the AIS marine traffic website to check where his son and grandson’s boats were located.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Zelma (Cottreau) Pothier; and their children, Owen (Lisa) Pothier and Bonnie (Alan) Cottreau; grandchildren, Chelsea (Chris), Nicholas (Kylie), Wynter; and recent great granddaughter, Estelle. He is also survived by his brother, Jean “John” (Marie) Pothier. Aside from his parents, Ernie is predeceased by siblings, Laurent Cottreau, Geraldine Doucette, Richard Pothier and Lyn Pothier. The family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses on 4 North at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital for their exceptional care during Ernie’s stay. Donations in memory of Ernie may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of choice. A funeral service will take place at a later date.
