Eric Otto Kokish
May 19, 1947 – June 10, 2023
Eric had many passions, among them food, baseball, music, and bridge. He was known in the international bridge community as one of the all-time great players, coaches, and writers, and even more so for his generosity, integrity, and huge smile. Eric enjoyed traveling and dining with friends in every part of the world, but what he treasured most was being home with his family – first in Montreal, then in Toronto, and finally in Peterborough.
His closest lifelong friend and confidante was his spouse, Beverly Kraft, who remained at the centre of his world for over four decades. He was an incredible parent (and parent-in-law) to Matthew Kraft-Kokish, Elyse Chazan (and Martin Vanderwoude), Lori Hurwitz (and Benyamin Hurwitz), and Mayera Chazan (and Ben Hodson). He adored his grandchildren: Franki Ikeman (and Thomas Surian), Andrew Ikeman, Alexandra Hodson, Cameron Hodson, Eliana (and Yoni), Yaakov (and Sarah Malka), and Dinah (and Shmuly). Eric grew up in Montreal as the exuberant only-child of Hugo and Lucy Kokish. A foodie from the start, he had fond memories of his dad’s bakery in Montreal West when he was a child. He embarked on every culinary adventure as an adult, often returning to his favourites: Chinese and Indian cuisines and wiener schnitzel.
Eric had many cherished long-time friends, some of whom he considered chosen family. He also loved every one of his animals in turn, most recently his dog, Charly. Although Eric struggled with his health intermittently in his final years, his passing was sudden. The family takes comfort in knowing that he was deeply loved and cared for, and that he went quickly and peacefully. If the party was over, he would have wanted to go home. He will be so missed by so many.
