It is with great sadness that the family of Elaine Agnes deRoaldes announce her peaceful
passing on Monday, February 20, 2023 at the Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary.
Elaine was born October 25, 1957 in High River, Alberta to Bob & Marj deRoaldes. She was the
4th of 5 daughters. Elaine started school in Cayley, followed by Vulcan and then on to the
Dorothy Gooder and Winston Churchill schools in Lethbridge where she lived and finished her
schooling. Her first job after leaving school was in Peace River working in the Provincial Building
cafeteria before moving to Calgary to work at Advanced Industries and finishing her working
career at the Chinook ScotiaBank Theatre taking tickets and ensuring that no person got
through the doors that didn’t pay or weren’t old enough.
Elaine was predeceased by her parents Bob and Marj deRoaldes, her sister Judy Lewis,
nephews Jeffrey Lewis, Jason Monkman and brother-in-law Hedley Thurston.
She is survived by her step-mother Peggy deRoaldes, sisters Sharon Thurston, Shirley
Monkman (Brian), Kathy Charchun (Rob), nieces and nephews; Natasha, Sandy (Braden), Colin Thurston
(Katherine), Ross (Jen) and Wes (Donna) Lewis, Nicole Monkman, Emily Burton (Colin),
Amanda Ritter (Danny). Great nieces and nephews include Cordelia Thurston, Cora Leach,
Jayden, Graysin & Jaxson Crowe, Mikah Stewart, Everlee & Lilly Struxness, Hudson & Payton
Ritter, Nolan & Ellie Sutton. Elaine will also be missed by special friends Joyce Siemens,
Michelle Juett & Kelly Lyon.
Elaine enjoyed the outdoors, loved riding her bike, became an accomplished swimmer, loved to
bowl, play floor hockey and bocce ball. Elaine was actively involved with the Special Olympics
for many years.
Elaine had a passion for hockey that predated the NHL expansion. She literally knew all players
on the original 6, their numbers and statistics. Saturday night she would sit beside Dad watching
the game and getting her hockey education! Cheering for the Calgary Flames became one of
her great passions. She had many favorite players over the years including Lanny McDonald,
Theo Fleury, and more recently Johnny ‘Hockey’ Gaudreau, Sean Monahan, and Matthew
Tkachuk. Elaine was more than displeased at the trade of the later three. Her all time favorite
Calgary Flame and human being was IGGY!! Jarome Iginla became a regular patron at the
movie theatre and no matter which door Elaine was taking tickets at, he sought her out and was
more than happy to sign hockey cards and of course a jersey which was a prized possession.
Even after Iggy was traded he dropped by to say hello when he was in town. Elaine loved to
attend games to either cheer on the Flames or give them the gears, depending on the score.
Her last trip to the Saddledome was in January with Kathy and Amanda. She was always happy
to see Wes who would seek her out when she attended games.
.
Another love was the Calgary Stampeders. You could see her sporting a Nik Lewis, Henry
Burris or Beau Levi Mitchell Jersey during football season. She got to the games as often as
she could, which was never often enough to suit her!
