Edward Weatherdon
1940-2023
Capt. (Retired) Cyril “Edward” Weatherdon of
Salisbury passed away peacefully at the Moncton Hospital on Sunday
August 6, 2023 following a two week stay after having suffered a
stroke and a heart attack. Born February 24, 1940 in Halifax, he was a
son of the late Cyril and Eunice Blair (Harrison)
Weatherdon.
Survived and sadly missed by his wife
Patsy (Davidson), two daughters Trinda Lee Rolfe (Tim), Lutes
Mountain, Tricia Luanne Weatherdon, Salisbury, grandson Tyler Lyndon
Rolfe and sister Mary Lynn Weatherdon -Keough, Edmonton. Predeceased
by an infant brother David Lloyd and a brother James Ernest of
Riverview.
As a teenager, Edward fed and cared for
“Gus” the tortoise who is now 100 years old , tropical fish,
a monkey and a snake at the NS Museum of Science in Halifax as an
aquarist.
He graduated from St. Mary’s University in Halifax
(Oct. 2,1964) and married the love of his life two weeks later. He was
employed at Canada Cement Co. Ltd., Point Anne ON as an Assistant
Research Chemist and after three years transferred to the Brookfield
plant as Assistant Chemist. In 1979 he transferred to Canada Cement
LaFarge Ltd., Havelock as Plant Chemist until
retirement.
Edward enjoyed target shooting, antique cars and motor
cycles. He enjoyed coaching the Air Cadets for the Biathlon and Air
Rifle Competitions which they won many times.
He was the Commanding Officer for 580 A/M Hugh
Campbell Squardron , Royal Canadian Air Cadets, Salisbury for 15
years. He went on to become an officer with 154 Amherst Ansom Squadron
. He was also a volunteer member of the St. John Ambulance in
Salisbury and a member of Branch 31, Royal Canadian Legion, Salisbury,
the Riverview Veterans and Armed Forces Association, Air Force
Association of Canada 105 (Cumberland) Wing, National Association of
Federal Retirees and St. Marys University Alumni. A member of
Salisbury United Church he served on several committees and helped run
the Salisbury Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings as a fundraiser for
the church.
Edward received the Governor General’s
Caring Canadian Award in 1998, Salisbury’s Mayor Award for Leadership
in the Community in 2003, Moncton Sports Wall of Fame for Marksmanship
in 2009, The Duke of Edinburg’s AwardYoung Canadian Challenge for help
to the youth of Canada, The Canadian Forces Sports Honor Roll as a
Builder of Shooting in 2005.
The Family will receive relatives and
friends at the Salisbury Funeral Home (506 372-4800) on Thursday
August 10 from 11 AM until time of Service at 1 p.m. with
Rev. Stephen Brown officiating.
