Douglas Brian Schottenbauer of Brooks, our father, grandfather, and amazing friend to many, passed away peacefully in Brooks, with his family by his side, on Tuesday, August 1st, 2023 at the age of 76 years. Doug was born in Lyleton, Manitoba on June 26th, 1947 to Viola and Andrew Schottenbauer, the second of 3 children. He attended school in Lyleton, then began working for local farmers until “Black Gold” called his name and he moved to Estevan, Saskatchewan to work on the oil rigs. Shortly after the move Doug was introduced to Helen, by a dear friend, Isabelle. They started to court in the spring of 1965 and were married in 1968. On August 27th, 1970 they were blessed with their first child, a beautiful baby girl they named Kimberley and on November 25th, 1974 they welcomed a handsome son they named Kory. Though the marriage between Doug and Helen wasn’t forever, their friendship lasted until the day of Doug’s death. Doug and Helen’s lives took them from Manitoba to Saskatchewan, then to British Columbia and finally, to Brooks. Doug worked alongside his brother Ernie in the oil industry. Doug started Doug’s Vacuum Truck Service in 1981, which became a successful oil and gas business he would own until his death. Many will remember Doug when they see a big blue vacuum truck rolling onto a location or driving down High #1. He was an amazing mechanic and could fix almost anything. This talent, along with Doug’s magnetic personality attracted many people to him and he had many lifelong friendships. He would love to sit and tell stories (mostly true), tell jokes and have a cold one. There is not enough ink to mention all the special friends in Doug’s life (you know who you are) but a few are the Patterson boys and their families, June Pisiak and his faithful companion Jake. Doug was predeceased by his parents Andrew and Viola and brother Ernie. He is survived by his children; daughter Kim (Shane) and son Kory (Deb); their mother Helen; grandchildren, Carly, Carson, Ben and Jack; sisters, Sharon (John), Sandra (Everette) and Shirley (Dale) and many special nieces, nephews and friends, who became family. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, August 11th at 4:00 PM from the Tilley Hall. Doug will make his last trip home on August 19th and interred in his hometown with his parents. There is a song that the family believes could be written for Doug, “Give Heaven Some Hell” and the line “You had a wild side but you had amazing grace” fits Doug perfectly. “Rest easy Doug, until we meet again Slim.”
