Obituary
Douglas Johann Ashley Bjarnason
Oct.16, 1951 – Dec. 30, 2022
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dougie Bjarnason, brother, uncle, and best friend after a short courageous battle with cancer on Friday, December 30th, 2022.
Dougie will be sadly missed by his brother Colin (Hazel), sister Susie, brother-in-law Alan, nieces and nephews Teresa, Kevin (Jody), Shianne, Kris (Megan), Joel, Sean, Nicole (Brayden), Jordan (Jenna), Caitlin, his great nieces and nephews Riley, Brody, Ostyn, Tytan, Kohen, Reese, Mason, Carter, Cayden, and many special cousins and dear friends. Dougie was predeceased by his parents Stoney and Dorothy Bjarnason, his sister Shannie, and niece Kiersten.
Dougie was born on Oct. 16, 1951 in Gimli, and spent all his years at the family home in Riverton, where he attended school and grew up playing hockey. He had so many hockey stories that he loved to share with everyone. He could often be found at the Riverton Arena, watching his nephews and great nephews play. He spent most of his years working for Parks and Conservation, with the majority of his 35 years on the Hecla Golf Course. It was there, where he made great friends, and enjoyed many rounds of golf with friends and family. The golf course was a place where Dougie also enjoyed another past time – arguing with Colin! A bond between brothers like no other.
Dougie loved the outdoors and he spent many days hunting and trapping. He loved fishing, whether it was in the summers off the boat, from shore, or hanging out in the ice fishing shack in the winters. He always had patience with his great nephews when teaching them how to fillet. Dougie was an animal lover, and always had a house full of pets. He loved to garden and could often be found in his yard tending to his plants.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and health care staff for the kind, and compassionate care given to Dougie at the Gimli Community Health Centre.
A celebration of Dougie’s life will be held on Jan. 9, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at the Riverton Hall. Cremation has taken place and a private interment will follow at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Riverton Memorial Arena, Box 532, Riverton, MB, R0C 2R0.
Goda Nott, Elskan.
