Pettigrew, Dorothy Beatrice (nee Shuel)
1927-2022
Dorothy Beatrice Pettigrewe (nee Shuel) died peacefully at home at the age of 95 on December 31, after a well lived life. Dorothy was a strong and resilient woman. From an early age, she worked the fields on the family farm in Es County. Later she pursued a career as a registered nurse, working primarily in the operating room at various hospitals in Ontario, as well as in London, England for several years, while her husband, Hubert (Hugh) pursued graduate studies. Dorothy took a break from health care to raise her three children, Laura, Colin, and Sara, but later returned to the profession and practiced until her retirement from the Queensway Carleton Hospital. A breast cancer survivor, Dorothy had a positive outlook and determination. In her retirement, Dorothy loved traveling with her beloved Hugh, whom she lost in 2014, shortly after celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.
Dorothy was an empathetic and caring professional, wife, mother, and grandmother, who always put the welfare of others before herself, and, of course, she made the most amazing apple pies.
Dorothy is survived by her two daughters, six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff at Carlingwood Retirement Community for their care and dedication.
Memorial arrangements will be made at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of Dorothy’s favourite charities, the Breast Cancer Society of Canada.
