The family of Donald Jacob Gertzen of Edmonton, Alberta is saddened to announce his passing on December 10, 2022, at the age of 88. This came just 7 days short of his 89th birthday and 75 days after the passing of his one and only love Jean.
Don will lovingly be remembered by his daughter Karen (David); his granddaughters Kaitlyn, Alexa and Delainey of Edmonton Alberta; his son Ken and grandchildren Leah and Lukas of Winnipeg. He will be dearly missed by extended family Shirley of Maple Ridge, Jim of Brandon, Erin of Victoria, and Linda of Calgary. He also will be missed by his friends, neighbours and coffee group of 25 years in Nanaimo and at his new home in the Devonshire Village community in Edmonton, Alberta where he was known as the “funny guy”. His sense of humour was second to none.
Don was predeceased by his father Bernardt; mother Elizabeth; sister Anne, Jean; wife of 62 years, as well as nephews William and Robert Robinson.
Donald was born in prairie Morden, Manitoba in 1933. Donald had a genuine love for animals as a child. After he finished school he worked in many trades such as plaster, roofing, and logging camp, and then drove for Coke-Cola until he landed work with Labatt’s Brewery in 1957. It was here that he met Jean and they married in 1960. After 37 years with the company, he retired.
Donald was neat, tidy and meticulous. He enjoyed bowling, swimming, and playing badminton, tennis and pool. He liked taking care of his dogs and loved gardening. Once he retired to Vancouver Island he built a large greenhouse. He enjoyed maintaining the greenest lawn in the neighbourhood and plenty of colourful flowers. He spent hours upon hours growing vegetables for the dinner table. He spent most mornings at McDonald’s with his coffee group. In the evenings they enjoyed walking their bichon dogs Tika and Taffy, completing the newspaper jumbles and watching his favourite tv programs. In September 2021, He moved into the Devonshire Village Community in Edmonton where he enjoyed talking to many people and picked up playing pool again.
After Jean’s passing, Don’s health began to deteriorate and he wished to be with Jean.
Rest in Peace now Dad. You are loved and missed.
A private celebration of life will be held on December 28th, 2022.
